So far no stomach problems on Pred in 5 months. My doc wants me to start Omeprazole.
By not taking it am I storing up stomach problems later down the line. ie is the Pred doing something now that Im not aware of because of no symptoms or if I was going to be affected would it have happened by now?
No - I never took any stomach protection and had GCA and was on high doses. To me they are -just in cases- so I just refused and said if and when I have problems I will deal with them then.
Others like me took my pred with yoghurt, preferably a probiotic one with a teaspoonful of manuka honey (natural anti-biotic). No side effects with those, whereas Omna comes with side effects and one of the most common is aches and pains. Read the side effects on the web.
Exactly the same as Jinasc. Omeprazole was routinely prescribed and it didn’t suit me so I religiously took Pred with Greek style yoghurt and a little local honey. However, I have been through phases of a proneness to acid indigestion and a sensitivity to certain foods. The worst episode was rather scary, painful oesophageal spasms. Thankfully these are extremely rare now. No treatment except over the counter indigestion remedies and recognising them for what they are, ie not a heart attack. So I can’t say, hand on heart, that Pred has not damaged my digestive system. I haven’t had an endoscopy or anything. I have been taking Prednisalone for 5 years though - I still would be reluctant to take Omeprazole and it’s like.
a) Acid Reflux: Unwaxed Lemon, 1 minute in microwave (gives three times more juice), squeeze lemon, divide juice into three, take with water three times per day.
Tip from another PMR person around 9 years ago - so tried and tested by quite a few 🤞
OMP gave me the most epic case of constipation you can imagine, and that has never, ever, been one of my problems. I'll never take it again unless I'm told I will die within days if I don't.
I've been on prednisolone for 2yrs now since my diagnosis and my rheumatologist wanted to automatically start me on omeprazole. Like others, I refused and said I would reconsider if I developed the need. So far I've not needed it and don't feel I wish to take any medication I don't actually need. I'm careful not to eat spicy food or known irritants to my own gut health and take my medication with food and some yogurt. On the odd occasion I've lapsed, I've developed acid indigestion for a day or so afterwards but been able to remedy this with some Gaviscon.
I was on Omeprazole many years ago when I was taking Naproxen on a long term regular basis. Both ver effective for me. I stopped the Omeprazole when I came off the Naproxen. As far as, I am aware it has caused me no problems. The doc put me back on it with the Pred and again as far as, I know, it causes me no problems although when I next talk to doc I might suggest I taper off it to see if I can do without. Like many others though I also take my Pred with Greek yogurt and a banana at around 02:00.
I have a history of stomach problems. I was diagnosed with PMR April 2019 , started on 15mg Prednisolone. Have been on Omeprazole for about 18 months now with no problems.
I was on Omniprazole since 20 years because of damage due to reflux and just continue under Pred. because I could not do without it. Almond milk with oats helps me out when my stomach hurts much instead of taking double dosage of OMZ.
Like a few others here I was prescribed it automatically when just diagnosed 5 years ago now but only took it for short time until I found this forum, realised I was probably in for the long haul with PMR and stopped taking it as had never had stomach problems and still don’t. Didn’t want to take extra drugs unnecessarily. Occasional acid reflux but usually on Christmas Day when I’ve eaten everything under the sun!! But I that also happened before PMR ever started.
In the hope others will see this comment: this person has already left the forum so anything you write now is a waste of your time and effort. They won't be notified ...
