PMR pain after vaccine?

Hi

Quick question. Had Oxford vaccine yesterday morning. Fine all day. Have woken this morning with a fair amount of increased pain. Is it the vaccine which means I wait it out or is it the PMR (triggered by vaccine maybe) which means I give the Pred a bit of a boost?

I’m on 4mg at present with no plans to taper further probably until I speak with an endocrinologist.

Answers on a postcard please - thanks! 🙂

Tricky. If it’s any help, it seems muscle and joint pain is fairly common if reports locally are to be believed, plus what’s in the media. Interestingly my husband who is in management in a company of 600 people is now getting calls coming in from those taking sick leave with this symptom amongst others. Difficult call because one also wonders whether to do sick day rules re adrenal and Pred. How have you felt on that front up to now? Is talking to a doc doable?

I would wait a day or two. The vaccine side effects should disappear within 48 hours and then you'll have a better idea.

As Snazzy says, this seems very common with the AZ vaccine even in young and healthy recipients and bad enough to require time off work. I had the Moderna shot and 2 or 3 days later did feel quite ropey in a possibly PMR way - I didn't take more pred and it went away as quickly as it came.

Thanks all ... I’ll throw paracetamol at it for now and keep an eye on it. No need to phone GP as I have full autonomy to change Pred dose as needed 🙂

Hi Loopy65

I had the Pfizer vaccine which was unnoticeable until about two weeks later when I had a flair and strange feeling of tingling over my body which was most strange. I was on 3mg pred before the shot so increased my dose up to 8mg which calmed the PMR down. After about 7 days I return to previous dose of 3mg. But for a good month after I didn't feel ok. A bit like I was coming down with something. Fortunately I feel better now, but I am not looking forward to the second Jab.

Ugh sounds horrible .. will be hoping with you that the 2nd dose isn’t as bad for you!

Hi Pastit, I haven’t felt right since I had the Pfizer vaccine in February.

It seems to have upset the apple art .

I temporarily increased Pred, but still feel ropey .

Dreading the 2nd dose in May , I believe statistically the side effects are worse with the second dose than with the AZ vaccine.

I guess we’ve got to forge ahead.

I caught Covid even though I was shielding , and am terrified of catching it again .

I was hoping they might change the recommendations for those who’ve had Covid . Best wishes

It will have been worse because you had had Covid - that was like a second jab in a lot of ways.

I did wonder this PMRpro , I may ask the doctor if I should have the 2nd jab . I imagine it’s similar to people who are convinced they developed PMR after having the flu jab . Problem being there probably isn’t enough data yet .

I thought they were saying you should still have the booster. Not having had Covid I haven't really taken much notice.

Earlier this year I did read they were undecided if people who’d had Covid would need the booster , but at present they still want everyone to have 2 doses . So I will have it .

I thought that was so - and after all, it is another poke at the immune system to get it right.

Hi Greensleeves, I can sympathize, and we are all different and some of us react differently to the majority. The problem being that those who have never experienced have little idea how we feel. When I get tired and exhausted perhaps out with friends, which now feels like years ago, no one in the group had any inclination how we feel as a PMR sufferer. So as now they think that we are ‘putting it on’ or overreacting. WE know differently and it makes us very wary of doing something again which causes us so much stress and pain. We are between “the devil and the deep blue sea” So we have to look at it another way and say to ourselves, “take the shot in the hope that it protect us from something more deadly” But like you, I am looking forward to it with severe reluctance!

Best wishes and take care, I’m Pastit.

I agree Pastit , even some family don’t understand how tiring , and to put it mildly “out of sync “ we feel on a daily basis. I will take the shot and remain hopeful it protects . Best wishes and take care .

If it’s any comfort to you, I believe it is thought that the second Astra Zeneca has less side effects than the first. Not sure where I saw it but was possibly a JoinZoe webinar 🙂

The good news is that the second vaccine with Astra Zeneca does not have such an effect. At least you know the vaccine is working on the other hand!

I wouldn't increase an immunosuppressant to deal with vaccine effects! Counterproductive!
