Allergic reactions to the Pfizer vaccine are rare

I thought this would be of interest to the people who are concerned about allergies with the vaccines. In the first week or so of the vaccine being administered in the USA almost 2 million doses were administered - and there were 4 cases of allergic reactions that required hospital treatment. Other cases were dealt with at the vaccine centre.

I don’t have a problem with the vaccine as long as it is not the experimental one that has not been approved by the FDA. One is the Moderna vaccine and the other one is the Pfizer if I’m not mistaken.

OH and I had the Pfizer vaccine just over a week ago, neither of us have had any problems not even a sore arm.

That’s good! Just been trying to o research the different vaccines and the efficacy of them and different side effects. Glad you were able to get one.

If a vaccine hasn't been approved by the local authority, the FDA for the USA, then it can only be used in clinical trials - and clinical trials are not really quite the same as saying it is "experimental",

None of the vaccines are "experimental" really since the mRNA technology used in the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines has been in use for other purposes for some 20 years, including immune therapy for cancers, but it had not been used for an approved vaccine before. A vaccine was in development for SARS-1 and MERS but the outbreaks faded away so it was judged that, because it wasn't highly infectious, isolation was the best way to protect against an outbreak. The technology was put on hold - luckily, because that is why these "new type" vaccines could be developed quickly. They already had the basic science knowledge that was needed and in the meantime other advances had been made in genomics to identify the virus's structure very quickly which is an essential prerequisite for designing the vaccine. It is also the reason they are confident that they can be tweaked for any variants that develop that the current vaccines don't cover. But even those revamped vaccines will have to be submitted for approval in the various countries.

I wrote yesterday to say I received the Pfizer vaccine on Friday evening, I have several allergies, latex, penicillin etc but all went to plan I just have a very sore arm. But I get a sore arm usually for a few days after the annual flu vaccine. ❤️

Hi

I had Oxford vaccine as I was told I couldn’t have the Pfizer one due to being allergic to penicillin 🤔

Hi 2013Mayo, I was asked what happens if I’m given penicillin, and as I don’t carry an EpiPen, my (regular practice nurse) just noted Penicillin on my form. The research papers for Pfizer and Astra Zeneca that I read didn’t list information about Penicillin, but it’s still very early days perhaps some are more cautious than others. Good luck with yours ❤️

A statement has been issued saying it isn't a problem.

I had the Pfizer vaccine last Thursday and had a sore arm but that’s it. I have asthma, various minor allergies and get anaphylactic reactions to shellfish and kiwi fruit so I carry Emerades. The doctors at the centre asked me questions about my allergic reactions and then said fine to have the vaccine. 👍

My partner, too. She declared it, the doctor checked it and she had the jab. No problems.

To add to the above, I had the Pfizer jab over a week ago, and apart from slight discomfort at the jab site. no other problems

I have known drug and food allergies. Two weeks ago I ended up at the emergency room. The only new exposure I had was to polyethylene glycol in a non-prescription medicine. Since it’s an ingredient in both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines my rheumatologist says to consult with an allergist first. I’m glad more vaccine options are coming available. I’m not eligible for a jab in my US state until April so I’ve got some time to sort it out.

I seem to be one of the few people who has had a bad experience with the Pfizer vaccine. We had the injection at 11.30 am and by mid afternoon the pain in my arm was really severe. I am having trouble with the wrist on the same side (? arthritis), and by evening I felt as if I had broken it ( which I did years ago) Gradually all joints ached and I felt as if I had flu. The pain required strong painkillers for 2 days, and I felt unwell for a week, whilst the pain and stiffness continued another week I am on 2mg of pred, and really didn't know whether to increase or not - my rheumy nurse is a bit of a bully and is pushing me to get off the steroids. I decided to try Ibuprofen, taken at a different time to the pred, and by the second day the improvement was amazing! Just like when I first started steroids, which I have been using for 3 and half years.

I have been dreading the second dose, but now know how to deal with it.

Not sure if I have done the right thing by telling of my experience in a reply to PMRpro, but felt it was helpful to report it somewhere on the forum so that other people can be aware of this possibility, which was quite distressing.

My husband was fine!
