Lansoprazole and Prednisolone

Can you tell me if I should take Lansoprazole before Pred or after Pred? Instructions on the box doesn’t say but one of you advisers said I should do so, to protect the stomach when I take the Pred. Someone else advised that I should take them all in the middle of the night to get me going in the morning with a spoonful of yoghurt. But shouldn’t they be taken with breakfast- again, before or after? I’m on 15 mg. of Pred.

Your usual helpful advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Silver-Babe. It can be confusing when first starting out and trying to learn about PMR and pred!

Pred should be taken with or just after food. The usual advice is that pred is taken with breakfast, but some people do take it at other times for various reasons. People who still wake in pain, even though they're on pred, might try taking their pred late at night, or in the early hours of the morning with yoghurt, or split their daily dose into 2 separate doses.

Lansoprazole should be taken before your breakfast and pred to protect your stomach. You should wait at least 30 minutes after taking Lansoprazole before eating and taking pred.

The effect of lansoprazole is quite long lasting - the effect of one dose should last for up to 24 hours even though it is excreted from the body after just a few hours. But it doesn't work immediately - it takes time to be absorbed and the peak blood level is after 1.5 hours. It works best taken on an empty stomach 30-60 minutes before food.

Even on lansoprazole, you should still try to take the pred with a meal if you can.

I am currently needing to take ibuprofen as well as pred (for a knee issue). I know that this is not ideal due to the potential for stomach issues but does anyone know if lansaprozole can protect against ibuprofen too? Gel isn't working or co-codamol. Tablet form ibuprofen seems the only effective thing

My rheumy uses ibuprofen or other high dose NSAIDs alongside pred for certain things where the pain relief needs some antiinflammatory effect. But he insists on something like lansoprazole too - it is the only time I will take it. The protective factor is that it stops the production of acid in the stomach and that reduces the damage that might be done if other drugs like pred or NSAIDs irritate the stomach wall where the acid would make it worse.
