The PMR relapse that wasn't

Since November, I've been around 1¼ mg pred. Mid December, experiencing PMR flare symptoms in my upper arms, I doubled the pred. False alarm.

During COVID-19 lock-downs, I had been walking around the neighbourhood every few days with 0.5 kg hand weights. When the lock-down eased, I found a local supplier of 1 kg weights. A couple of weeks later, mid December, I had PMR-like pain in my upper arms!

Early in January the penny dropped, and I am now fine on 1.1 mg pred and walking with more restraint.

A cautionary tale. 😊

Your experience is a clear example of how easy it is to impact adversely on our condition. If we didn't know better, it would be hard to believe such a small change could make such a big difference! Pleased you found a positive outcome.

Twice the hand weight now seems rather a big change when hill-walking for 45 minutes.

It can be quite soul destroying to go from being healthy, active and strong, to something less than that. Before PMR, I was at the gym 5 days a week, walking...sometimes in the Yorkshire dales where I'm originally from.... Peak district, Lake district at times. Now it's much more sedate walks locally, (even before the pandemic) yoga and gentle weights. Was hard to adjust and even harder to feel my body strength deteriorating. However, I'm learning to manage my physical fitness better and things are improving VERY slowly.

At 71 years, I must have been lucky these past three years. With pred, I was soon back to my pre-PMR fitness so far as I can tell. As always, I exercise a dozen hours a week, much of it strenuous.

I suspect having absolute control of my pred intake helps a lot.

Hi,Which part of the Yorkshire Dales? I spent my first eighteen years in Sedbergh in the Howgill Fells - God's own country!

Haha! Absolutely it is. Walking has involved everywhere...3 Peaks, Malham, Hawes, Bolton Abbey, Grassington, Settle, Buttertubs....too many places to mention. I originally lived ilkley and skipton side of leeds but my husband...Richmond in Nth Yorks. So, lots of time in swaledale, wensleydale. Just so beautiful.

Memories, memories! I started work in Leeds in 1958 and drove home at weekends through Otley, Ilkley, Skipton, Settle and Kirkby Lonsdale before heading to Sedbergh. I absolutely loved it up there.Paddy

DOMS - delayed onset muscle soreness- many with PMR suffer, so it is related.........and also goes to show that it’s safer to be in lockdown, than go shopping 😳

Hmm. I hadn't thought of some PMR contribution to my muscle soreness from hand weights.

If so, it is strange there's been so little PMR contribution to soreness in other strenuous activities over the past three years.

True - but you are at such a low dose now, that may be the subtle difference...as we know PMR doesn’t do things by the book!

But you probably got there gradually and continued with it once PMR appeared. That works - but sudden changes generally don't. You doubled your weights overnight. I used to have hollow weights that you added water to - could creep up slowly. Like the 500ml water bottles I suggest for beginners which are quite a nice size for hands.

Out of interest how did you get to 1.1mgm?

I weigh pred on a $13 Chinese scale, capable of weighing to the nearest mg. So, I can weigh fragments of 5 mg pred tablets to a precision of about 0.1 mg pred.

I spend a couple of hours weighing tablets every six months, and store them in a Chinese, 14-compartment, pill box.

I am now tapering at 0.1 mg pred per month.
