I had en email yesterday from our Village Clerk to the Council advising that there is a new scam doing the rounds and thought I would mention it here to warn everyone. I do hope this is allowed, please remove if not.
The scam is sent by text saying that "you have been identified as someone who qualifies for the covid vaccine so please follow the link to contact us to make an appointment". If clicked on it appears to be the NHS page( but obviously isn't) and it requests personal information and credit card details to prove identity.
Really nasty thing to do when vulnerable people like us are eager to get the jab and its so easy to get fooled. Please be careful.

As the near victim of a similar but phone-based event I can attest to the fact that if your first thought is not "Watch out for scammers" but rather "This affects my life I need to pay attention" it is very easy to be led quickly down the garden path. I was called by someone alleging to be calling from the Arthritis Society. My first red flag should have been when I mentioned that I thought I already supported the charity and could she check the database, but she said she didn't have access to that. I agreed to make a small one time donation anyway and was passed over to someone to "verify" the call. I was asked what credit card I used and told to key the numbers into the phone. At that point I stopped dead and said no way. But I was on the verge of doing it. Our family (specifically my stepmother) was defrauded out of hundreds of thousands of $$$ via phone calls and we are always alert to these matters, but my guard was down.
We had a huge amount of funds wired out of our bank account. We had no idea, they were able to change our phone number, change our password, take out a loan, all that got wired to a parking lot address in NYC. The bank it was mailed to said the account was closed as soon as the funds arrived. I will always think it was an inside job, this happened at Shell FCU, in Texas. 😡
I had a scam text today supposedly from Pay pal saying they were going to close my account due to safety concerns. I had to click on a link, as I have never used PayPal I just deleted it. Beware everyone. Happy New Year.
