Another update to “Dental Question “

Well, today was the appointment for me to have the two teeth out. I decided to ask the dentist again about his instruction to stop Pred for two days - which I HADN’T done - and he looked surprised. I reminded him that he had never told me to do this previously, then explained that I had taken advice from the rheumatology nurse who said definitely NOT to stop. He got a bit confused then admitted he was thinking of another drug - and that he’d been looking at another patient’s notes at the time. I was very tempted to pursue the matter further but, seeing as I was in a vulnerable position, waiting for the injections to work, I decided to take the coward’s way out and say nothing!!

But something else I wanted to check out, the actual extractions went without a problem but I had really bad bleeding afterwards. It’s ok now - 8pm - but I’m wondering whether this could have been caused by the Pred. I’d appreciate your opinions.

Thanks, Jan

Oh, Jan......

That just goes to show, remember l mentioned getting his instructions in writing! And highlights just how very easy a nasty outcome could happen & please you perused the advice.

Glad the bleeding has stopped now, there’s no reason to suspect the Pred causing excessive bleeding it’s more the healing that worries Drs/Surgeons.

Possible, pred can causing bruising because of delicate capillaries. But if it has stopped now that should be OK. When I had a tooth out I expected to bleed as I need anticoagulant therapy but he gave me a solid cotton wool plug and said to bite hard on that for quite a while and not eat for a few hours - it was fine. It all depends where the root is - if there is a handy blood vessel to get damaged when the tooth is pulled it might bleed quite a bit.

I would follow it up - if he can do it once he could do it again and might make someone rather unwell.

Not ideal but at least he had the guts to admit he made a mistake, and you had the sense to question it. Hopefully he will have learned to be more careful. We need more upfront honesty in medicine these days, not being afraid to own up to slip ups for fear of consequences.

Bet you’re glad it’s over anyway!
