Roses

Hi, I can’t compete with the beautiful gardens some of you have shown - a solace to the spirit - but I love roses and they have been pretty spectacular this year so I’m sharing. I feel like a mother showing off her advanced children 😀. (Do you remember the shock of discovering other young Mums comparing the number of teeth their babies had as though it was a competition and they had fertilised the growth themselves? 😂).

Doesn't matter whether the rest of the garden is Chelsea standard, Roses speak for themselves...

They are lovely and you look after and care for them.............I have the purple coloured one and it does not look one half as good as yours. Do you know the name?

David Austen’s Bleu Magenta. They’ve just loved the sun we’ve had these past two years xx

Thank you. it was a present many years ago and until I saw yours I never knew its name.

Odd, All the roses in my garden (except 4) are DA. Two of the others - are rescues 'Alfred Bell' and the other two are no name. When they bloom I will take a picture ready for the next off-piste day.

It has been a good year for the roses...(think that's a song!)...our very old ones are the best this year....love your orange one .......

😂🤣😂 but I feel the same about my veggies. If I get lots of peas and Tommies I am pleased as punch. Roses lovely and a nice border too 🌹

How lovely and so satisfying. I grow Tommy Tumblers, courgettes and blueberries. But raw peas are divine, sadly my garden is too small for them. I have such wonderful quiet times in the garden, running a pub for birds and checking that my solitary bees aren't being caught by spiders when they come out. I'll stop now before I spout poetry :)

😂🤣😂 I have so many seedlings to go in. I don't have enough garden prepared. Just waiting for a delivery of more compost to try and create a few more pots for them. I grew patio toms and peas last year but expanded this year. A friend grow tumbling Tom's in her hanging baskets.

They are absolutely beautiful😃 I never have much luck with roses , we visited David Austin out near Wolverhampton. I bought one called Tess of the D’urbavilles (sp) homage to Thomas Hardy, but it’s struggling. Any tips ? 🌺🌺🌸🌸

"er", not a - Durbervilles

Was it in a pot or bare rooted?

In a pot. We had another one the year before called Teasing Georgia , we lost that too ☹️☹️☹️☹️

I haven’t grown roses in pots - they need too much care and you have feed and water too often! But I’m no expert . Horrid when you lose then 😘

We bought it in a pot, it was a climber so we put it up an arch, did well that year but we lost it through the winter 😢

Both from DA or different places? I always have my doubts about roses in a pot - though I'd expect DA to be less of a risk - they may have been over or under watered at some point and the damage can be longlasting.

DA are renowned for good quality that’s why we went there! How wrong could we be, I’m sure the roses were fine it’s our care that’s at fault😡

Did it get frosted?

We think there is a slight slope in that area of garden , we had a wet cold winter and it probably sat with it’s feet in wet , we are on clay too. Our other rose that we are trying to save got saw fly last year🤬

It's so downheartening isn't it. Maybe improve the drainage there - a deep hole, layer of stones at the bottom, so it drains? And plant in a compost mix?

"The expression that roses do not like wet feet is a reference to the fact that roses require good drainage. Roses are not swamp plants and will not grow in standing water. The root system of the rose requires air in the soil to breathe, and standing water will actually drown a rose." scvrs.homestead.com/WaterAn...
