I must start off by apologising for deleting the 'wine post' recently, lots of you were having fun with it and I was overcome with emails. I panicked and whipped it off 🙈.
I was diagnosed with pre diabetes in early January with a blood sugar reading of 6.4, I weighed 202lbs. I am 5'9" tall. By the middle of March I had another test and was down to 185lbs and my blood sugar reading was down to 5.7 well back in check. I was a happy boy. Then out of nowhere came PMR in late April and I started swallowing pred at 15gms per day. My weight has continued to fall, now 175lbs through fairly strict diet, still drinking a glass of red wine a day.......(no more posts!!😹) however my blood sugar has risen up to 6.8. I am a bit in shock, I read Pred can bring on increased sugar in the blood, any advice or knowledge, thanks.

Hi gunflash, yes pred causes random spikes of glucose and if not managed can lead to steroid induced diabetes. The main thing to do is cut the carbs down...potatoes, rice, pasta, anything with flour in it all need to be limited or stopped. Fruits and other sugar based foods also require close management and reduction. In place of the carbs, you increase the amount of good fats you have. The fats satisfy your appetite so with low carb high fat diet, recommended in the diabetes UK site, you can limit the length and intensity of the pred spikes. I lost over 2st doing it that way on 12mg downwards. At 7mg now. Hopefully you will find it lowers your hba1c.
P.s. red wine has 2.6g per glass. And I presume that's a measured glass...not the ginormous glasses there are...but just for you I got a link to keto wines ....🤣😂🤣
I meant that particular brand - its a blend, wines from down the road, well, round the corner, so I assume it is a company just producing for the export market.
I was diagnosed with type 2 about 3 months after PMR diagnosis, I was prescribed gliclazide and started the low carb high fat diet. 6 months later I had to come off gliclazide as my sugars were going too low. I might add when I was diagnosed my blood sugars were close to 20. I now have it well under control. From testing my blood I know that my sugars spike about 4 hours after taking prednisolone for about 4 hours so I don’t eat during that time. So I have breakfast at 8 a.m. and then dinner at 5p.m.
It works for me and my diabetic nurse says I am in remission with a hba1c of 35 although many say my diabetes is well controlled.
The LCHF diet has certainly worked for me so look it up. I try to keep my carbs down to under 25g
