For anyone looking in - it is also known as Bonviva

Is it also a 'variety' of Alendronic Acid?

It's a bisphosphonate yes - ibandronate sodium, AA is alendronic acid. Just different structures.

I'm in the middle of trying to cope with the side effects of Risedronate. I was on Alendronic acid some weeks ago without side effects, although for reasons unknown GP only prescribed 4 weeks. Consultant put me on Risedronate and bam, bam amd more bam ....serious stomach problems. Took myself off after two doses and today been sent for even more blood tests to check liver, anaemia etc etc. I don't mind boiled water, cream crackers and lemon jelly but you can't live on that!

Meanwhile waiting to see what GP will do about my possible GCA symptoms.

You did ask!:-) I assume you have side effects?

I actually didn't have any side effects the first go round and my dexa was good but I'm wondering if it will be necessary this time. Shouldn't calcium and vitamin D be enough?

I asked my GP a similar question. I've never broken a bone in my body (at over 80 years), I drink a large glass of milk every day, I am on calecalciferol; why do I need something as a precaution against osteoporosis?

You might - cow milk isn't the ideal source of calcium. But a dexascan and calcium/vit D saved me taking AA for over 7 years. Due another (would have been done, thanks Covid) but haven't been as diligent about the calcium tablets - but have been eating loads of cheese and taking vit D. We'll see ...

I noticed no one mentioned magnesium. Regardless of what drugs or calcium and D supplements are used, the calcium cannot be taken up to build new bone without adequate magnesium. Dairy foods are not a good source of magnesium.
