Itching blisters on my legs

One month before my PMR onset I got these itching, aching blisters on the back of my ties. Looks like herpes but they do not go away without hydrocortisone. They are watery and comes in clusters. When I started my Pred treatment they disappeared of course. Now after weaning off they have returned.

I can't help wondering if they have some connection to this autoimmune disorder in my body. I wonder if someone else in here have heard of or experienced something similar.

Hi pirnilla. Are you sure it's not shingles?? Blisters that ache/or really sting ache has been shingles for me in the past.🌻

Where are they?

About a similar time to the start of the PMR symptoms I developed a sort of rash which started the same with a patch of intense itching which then suddenly turned into a patch of tiny watery blisters which skinned easily. I had itches and rashes elsewhere, notably in skin folds, especially under my boobs and in the groin. Only one cream helped, a 3-way mix of steroid, antibiotic and antifungal. Then I realised when I was at home trying to lose weight with lower carb it improved but always returned after a holiday in Italy. I narrowed it down to wheat - no place in low carb, but I ate pizza and pasta here. I switched to gluten-free - rash disappeared.

It isn't gluten though, it is wheat starch which now makes life easier. We did wonder for a time whether it was the skin form of coeliac disease - but the dermy I saw was just nasty, not cancer, not interested basically. I discussed it with the local coeliac specialist and we decided the agony of eating enough gluten for 2 months to do the tests was probably not worth it if I could manage it with diet. I can. It is an allergy to commercialised wheat, probably the starch - and pred suppresses it to a great extent. It is also a big incentive to stick to low carb!

They are placed on my butt and down towards my hamstring.

Wow, that sounds exactly like me. Before my PMR diagnosis they took bloods to test gluten but no result. When I read about skin celiaki it sound really similar. And from my Pred treatment start I have tried to keep the wheat down as much as I can but not totally gluten free.

Good to know, thank you for sharing!

If you think they look herpetic, you could try applying a 'cold sore cream' to see if that works. In the UK we can buy 5% acyclovir cream 'over the counter', without prescription.

I hope you get relief soon.
