Over the last 6 1/2 years I have been in so much pain in my shoulders neck and hips more so if I try any hard exercise, however the last 18 months I have been on prednisone and feel much better the last 6, I am on 6mg at the moment and thought I would give jogging a go, I did think that this would flare my hips because any other exercise I have done has, but I feel no extra pain and In fact feel my legs are stronger,
I am very overweight and no matter what I try to do I can’t lose weight so thought jogging may help. I am doing couch to 5k on a app so it’s slow going, and not to hard.
Has anyone Any ideas why this is helping me.
I have alway done at least 1hour walking or swimming 3-4 times a week

Maybe your pmr is at a stage where an increase in activity is ok but please bear in mind you can not just go back to full on exercise. Remember to give your body a rest between your jogging days. Walking and swimming are excellent forms of exercise and I personally would be inclined to increase those rather than jogging but obviously that isnt an option with isolation at the moment. Take it easy.YBB
THANK YOU for all your reply’s, 4 times so far, I am repeating week one until I feel comfortable with the amount of time jogging. In total it’s only 20 mins with a 5 minute power walk to warm up and cool down. And of course I stretch before and after. Since having PMR my muscles don’t flex very well at all
Your exercise programme is admirable and I am glad that it is helping you. Watch your knees though. Jogging is harsh for the knee joints. You may have moved into another phase of recovery and have timed the acceleration just right. After 4 years of PMR I have become more flexible for no reason other than the disease process receding. Unfortunately GCA has just robbed me of the stamina I need to go with it. Treat this gift with respect. 😃
Hi Carol, well done for taking up jogging. I know we are all social distancing at the moment but go on the internet and see if there are any groups near you. They will give you plenty of advice. You probably won't loose weight straight away because you are building up muscle which will make you stronger. After 3-4 weeks measure yourself as you will have toned up without realising it. Remember listen to your body. Well done!
Things aren’t always logical, I can assure you. One year ago I got this bad pain in one of my hips. It turnés out to be beginning of artheritis and I started training with a physiotherapist. After e months of doing that, not getting any better, I went for a short jog. The next day I felt better! My physio told me that they can’t always tell what is good or bad concerning the body. She just said ”be careful, listen to your body, if it feels good, it is!”
Hello carolBF , I’m exactly 5 years since PMR diagnosis and now W5R2 of Couch to 5K -and starting to enjoy it. Feeling so much better than I did 5 years ago! Sounds as if you are doing great. There’s a very helpful C25K forum on HealthUnlocked if you haven’t already found it. All the best x
I started walking daily in early January - and despite it being very short distances within 3 days my achilles started pulling. Medrol plus the wrong antibiotic caused a problem 6 years ago - and it was back. I've never had a problem with stiffness since I started pred - but jogging? No, never could, never will!
I did C25K a few years ago, and then some physical issues stopped me running, would love to get back to it again. Will seriously think about slowly starting again, I still have all the podcasts and mp3s for each week.
I’ve never enjoyed running even 30 years ago and when I was 3 stone lighter but am happy using the Couch to 5k app and my own music on phone. You can even choose your celebrity trainer. I’m not convinced I’ll actually finish the course, I’ve given up on sorting out the old photos, but need to achieve something in lockdown 😊 I’m paranoid about scanning the ground in front as don’t want to do in my ankles but more fun than cleaning/tidying the house which was also on my lockdown list. All the best
Anything probably better than cleaning/ tidying the house😂😜🤣but would add yes watch your knees! I used to jog years ago and I really enjoyed it. Can’t see me doing it again but all the best to you!
Good for you. Be proud of yourself. I am now at a worrying weight. It's making my back sore and even though the pred might work for the muscle pain the weight is making it difficult to get up and down. I'm hatching a plan now as I am worried I won't fit into any clothes at the end of this quarantine. Keep at it you.
Your situation is quite close to mine, although I had a stroke 6 yrs ago, and started the PMR thing about 3 years ago. I've been swimming once a week for ages but the pool closed due to Corbyn19, so I had to do something else, so decided to go back to running, doing C25k , to my schedule not the app, I did 1min walk, 1min run, to build up, as my body had forgotten how to do the jogging/running thing ! I got up to 1min walk, 4min run, and feeling good about it, then hurt my back doing gardening! My Osteopath could fix me but he's not working due to Corbyn 19 ! I'm down to 0.5mg of Pred . So that's not an issue.
I want to start again but not to agitate my back, but if its doing You good and Your body feels fine, keep on going, and best wishes for all your effort.
I have also found that jogging is helping. I had got down to 2.5 of pred but was miserable with pain in right hip and shoulder that was stopping me from even doing gentle gardening and from sleeping. Having had some minor surgery just before lockdown and having had to increase pred to 20 to cover the op I found that when I had reduced again to 5mg I was really comfortable. Discussed with rheumatologist and he is happy for me to stay at 5 for a while. I have been able to walk up to 5 miles with no ill effects, cycle up to 8 miles and am on week two of Couch to 5k. I probably wouldn’t have done any of this if I hadn’t had my 32yr old daughter at home who motivates me to move! I am careful though and listen very carefully to my body and space out the days of running so I recover in between. Now sleeping better, more energised and reducing to 4.5 with slow tapering. Long may it last but I’m not unrealistic but I’m really enjoying life more than ever in the last four years of PMR.
