THE FERRET

The Ferret Fact Service is keeping a running tally of misinformation linked to the novel coronavirus outbreak to help everyone stay safe.

If you see anything you think we should check please email us at factcheck@theferret.scot

This is an excellent site, some of us have used it for a long time.

Thought I would share.........

Stay Safe and well.

Here’s the actual link in case it’s helpful. I agree with jinasc , it’s a good site for all sorts of fact checking.

Have added it to the main post - thank you very much!

I checked it............. and it worked, I wonder what went wrong.

Thank you. xx

I think the link had just disappeared somehow when you first posted as it wasn’t there at all. I knew where to find it so posted it in my reply and then PMRpro added it to your original post - if that makes sense? 🤔

I love the way people help out on here when something is not right. Thank you and please keep on doing it.

I keep on getting a little item from 'Mr G' when I am looking for something - which says something - can't remember what - and I have then to prove I am not a robot.................grrrr C'est la Vie.

Stay well in Bonnie Scotland. We took three years of holidays to go right round the coast staring out just over the border on the west coast and then ending up at Berwick. It too two years to do the Highlands and then one year, Orkney 1 week and Shetland 2 weeks one year before the Oil. Snowy Owls on Fetlar and a grind I am named after. I could have happily moved to Shetland.

Thanks jinasc. It was no trouble at all.

I think you maybe mean a 'captcha' to show you’re not a robot? Yes they are really annoying! But they probably save us from lots of spam so maybe worthwhile overall.

We're doing our best up here and we were a bit later than elsewhere to get our first confirmed case of the virus but hospital (and in particular ICU) provision in the Highlands is, to say the least, limited and people seem to be arriving in campervans in droves just now. I can’t believe how selfish and stupid people can be. The village shops are lifeline services for the locals and if they are emptied by people who really don’t need to be here it’s going to cause serious difficulties not to mention of course the likelihood of spreading the virus around....🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes, that word was 'captcha' Ta.

Someone I know has a second home in the Lakes - has just gone over for a week because their planned holiday was cancelled. I told them they were mad and thoughtless. Doubt if they were happy with me.

The NHS in Cumbria struggles at the best of times and many of their critical patients ( heart, cancer, spinal injuries and even GCA - short of Consultants always) are sent to out of their area hospitals, either here or next county down. grrrrrrrrr.

Now what kind of border control could we put in place? Maybe say that visitors can only eat haggis and have the bagpipes played to them every daybreak? 😂😂😂

Seriously it is most selfish and dangerous of these escapees from the south.

in reply to jinasc

The robot thing online drives me mad!!! My phone was on the blink and I had to do 6 to try and get into my mobile provider to do an upgrade. Honestly I thumped the screen. I felt stupid as hurt the phone and my hand. I went by phone and that took 3 attempts. 😤

Thanks jinasc...i have got to say if people believe some of the rubbish out there I wonder what world they live in. Breathing in and holding your breath for 10 secs. 😬

Sadly they do though...

Someone at work insisted to me that that one was scientifically proven....I think it was circulating widely on FB.

Nearly forgot my language. A sign I should go to bed as intended! (*_*)Book:-O

Yeah well - look at the science the gubmint quoted at us to start with about herd immunity. Lord only knows where THAT concept came from. And mathematical modelling that had already been far superceded by real life.

Highlandtiger profile image
Highlandtiger in reply to PMRpro

Seems to be being suggested that Vallance and Cummings might be 'close allies'...? Might explain....?

buzzfeed.com/alexwickham/10...

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Highlandtiger

Possibly - I could not believe some of the stuff Vallance was saying. It was already overtaken by events but he still insisted it was right, Chris WIity was good at first but he then came up with some unbelievable tripeabout something, probably the herd immunity stuff, and that shook my faith in him.

maria40 profile image

Also reported that the delightful Cummings said 'if some pensioners die so what?'

Highlandtiger profile image
Highlandtiger in reply to maria40

Yes, the article in the ST today is interesting. I've linked to it on today's Covid post. He is now apparently a strong advocate for staying indoors to save lives. I just hope the country isn’t too far behind the curve because of the original thinking...

jinasc profile image
jinasc in reply to Highlandtiger

You can credit him with brains, but COMMON SENSE, he must have been last in the queue.

Yes, he believes in science. Don't we all, but there is no excuse when the first country China and the Italy were suffering long before the UK.

roshough profile image
roshough in reply to PMRpro

herd immunity is a genuine scientific concept...just not using language that is politically correct in the current non-scientific age! Our daughter is in the British Forces, where in order to keep some of the military functioning, they are purposely trying to infect some healthy young soldiers/officers in order to get some immunity...for how long??...so that some of them are able to function at any one time.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to roshough

I'm well aware it is a valid scientific concept. But it was not something to play with here as it is a new virus and they don't even know that immunity will be developed at all, never mind a sustained one which is what will be required,

I am naturally concerned re my own family...just report what is happening in the UK right now. I am stuck in Spain confined to my house for the last week. I am grateful to be here and taking every precaution to avoid contact. But both my daughters in the UK are in frontline jobs.

I have close friends in Spain, but as he was telling me the phone tonight - driver only in a car and if there are two, pulled over and let go if the journey is to medics.

A car were, near where he lives was pulled over by the police to make sure they were telling the truth. They were and had a piece of paper from the chemist.

Oh. he also said, but I have not checked this as FACT - petrol stations are advising people to wipe the handle of the pump before they use it.

roshough profile image
roshough in reply to jinasc

The things re just one person in the car is correct. If you have more for a "necessary reason"...then the other person should be in the back seat with a face mask on. Lorry drivers and delivery trucks can have more but then they all need to wear masks. Police are stopping people regularly, and wont let you go to more than 1 shop. Get in and out s quickly as possible.

roshough profile image
roshough in reply to PMRpro

I hope your family are OK....its a hard time for us all...and has suddenly hit so quickly.

maria40 profile image

I'm no medic but I understand that, even in theoretical terms, it couldn't work without a vaccine being available

jinasc profile image
jinasc in reply to roshough

Yes, but as I understand it, it can take up to 2 years. We don't have two years.

I might be wrong, but ...............

jinasc profile image

You ain't kidding and you 'herd' right............ but lately they have only occasionally used the 'h' word.

This ferret site is really good. I have a few people here where I live who believe in high doses of certain vitamins...ans are totally convinced. How can I convince them otherwise?

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS in reply to roshough

Show them the numbers on this site:

worldometers.info/coronavirus/

and tell them to read this:

wired.com/story/coronavirus...?

If vitamins worked wouldn't we all be using them? Would we ever die of any disease?

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to roshough

Not sure you can - they WANT to believe it. It is their illusion of control.

roshough profile image
roshough

I dont quite understand what you are saying...but yes lots of folks have relatives and friends affected by it all. Its truly awful. I am still not sure if one member of the household goes out eg to the shops whether if they did bring back anything, it would show itself in 7 days...or 14, or do you start counting again once you have had contact with the outside world. We have now been in lockdown for 7 days.

Thanks for this. Sad in some cases, actually malicious in others. People just love to boss others about on any pretext.
