Thanks, as you say dispels a few myths.

I'm just back from the dentist who was surprised that I didn't want to shake hands. Things we do without thinking everyday.

in reply to scats

My hands have been too sore to shake hands for a few years. The last time I shook hands the bloke squeezed and shook... There were tears. At least they wear masks and gloves. I am at the dental hospital. They don't shake hands cos they get sick of washing their hands. The do before they put gloves on so an I between wash or two would really put the numbers up!

Hope you're not having anything too nasty done.

What really amused me at the dentist was a sign on the reception desk saying don't enter the building if you have any symptoms of the virus!

😂🤣😂 Horse three miles away...

I am hoping that eventually it will be put on the outside door. If it's still there when I go back next week I will say something.

You should have pointed out the lack of logic ...

Logic? Whazat?

Like common sense, a commodity in short supply it seems!

For some reason I just wanted to get out of the place!

And to be honest I couldn't believe what I was reading until my husband asked if I'd seen the sign.

Thanks for this-helpful. However, non-plussed by the same website, on its PMR page, saying ibuprofen may be used and symptoms often go within 1 month- 1 year! Really?

PMRpro profile image

There are things about VUK I don't understand either! But I read this and decided it was OK for dissemination ;)

Very sensible advice. Thank you for posting it.

Thank you!!

I’m a “face-toucher” so trying to practice avoiding this behaviour starting now.

Now, if we can stop the spread of panic that would help too (good luck given the media buzz and people having access to a whole range of sources).

in reply to PMRCanada

Put spiky gloves on or something sticky at home 😉. It really is hard. I now use the back of my hand for an itch but not sure that's any better!

As soon as I think "must not touch face" I start to feel every hair touching my forehead, my nose gets a tickle, my eye feels like something has fallen into it.... aaaargh

Yep!

I used the back of my left hand to move my hair and rub my nose and chin 4 times whentyping my message above. It really freaked me how automatic it was.

I’ve been consciously trying to concentrate on not touching my face today and it’s just made me realise how often I actually do it..... 🙁

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS in reply to Highlandtiger

Realised I was touching my face as I was reading your reply! Although some experts say a mask is useless and will make you touch your face more often anyway, others suggest the one use for a mask is it will remind you not to touch your face!

Highlandtiger profile image
Highlandtiger in reply to HeronNS

I just read on another site that someone was wondering if there would be a measurable decrease in the usual diseases as a result of the surge in hand washing (and presumably decrease in face touching)......good question! 🤔

Highlandtiger profile image
Highlandtiger in reply to HeronNS

I investigated a bit further and the Wall Street Journal suggests that that is exactly what is happening in Japan....fewer cases of flu this year.

Would really be interesting if the level of air pollution in locked down areas has reduced.🚘✈️

It has - China and the Po plain in Italy which is where the Lombardy infection focus is and has been shut down for some weeks now are both cleaner

Someone from the WHO (I think) said this morning that there is no point wearing a mask unless you have symptoms - and not to generally buy and use masks because they need to be kept for medical staff. You can, after all, cover your face with a scarf ...

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS in reply to PMRpro

I have not and do not intend to look for face masks. As far as I know none are left to be bought anyway, and the ones we'd have been able to get wouldn't be suitable for medical staff anyway.

Excellent advice. Written in plain English. Thanks.

in reply to Estellemac

Yes plain english always the best... I know they need to use some medical vocab.... But if we are at certain high doses, tapering, or just gaga.. We need to have some junderstanding.

I touch my face all the time, I'm going to have to work on this! I've just come in from our back garden cabin and into the bathroom. After I'd switched the light on I started to become more conscious of what I touched. After going to the loo I washed my hands thoroughly then used a piece of toilet paper to unlock the door open it and switch the light out. The door into the dining/ kitchen room was open and the lights on. So far all well and good. My downfall started in the kitchen. First thing I do is eat a bit of left over food from one of my grandsons' plates (I know I shouldn't really but I'm easily tempted ☹) Next I open a drawer to get a pan out, lift the lid on the cooker and on it goes. Finally of course there were the plates and cutlery from the communal stock. I could have washed my hands thoroughly after dishing up but I'd still be touching the cutlery. I suspect stopping the any spread from the family would be almost impossible!

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Louisepenygraig

I suspect the use of a dishwasher would help a lot. I must start using the 60C wash maybe ...

Louisepenygraig profile image
Louisepenygraig in reply to PMRpro

If only we had a dishwasher, or room for one. My daughter was talking to a friend on Facebook who said maybe we could isolate ourselves in our cabin but I'm not sure how practical that would be. It's not really warm enough to use full time yet and although we now have a microwave out there and a can set up a gas ring there's not much room for food storage. If a family member did get the virus we'd probably have caught it by the time we knew they had it. I'm not really too worried right now but I do enjoy planning!

Until we moved to Germany him indoors helped with the dishwashing - he can't cook, even the dog would turn their nose up, but he did either wash or dry. In Germany that went by the board - he claimed none of his colleagues did. I pointed out that was because they all had dishwashers (they did). There was no space in our furst flat but when we moved it came with a sink unit and nothing else. The first extra that was put in was my birthday present - a scratched but new dishwasher and the rest of the kitchen was built around it. Haven't been without one since - best part of 40 years!

Constance13 profile image
Constance13 in reply to PMRpro

In those days "it wasn't DONE for

men to work in the home" here. If you couldn't manage you had someone in. Now the youngsters help much more - but, of course, their wives nearly all work full time too.

The first thing on my daughter's wedding list was "dishwasher" - before fridge/freezer. She thought the latter was always included in the kitchen.😂

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Constance13

I'd rather be without a washing machine for a week than my dishwasher!! Kitchen cleared up straight into it even before dinner, washed and dried ready for the cupboard by breakfast and I didn't have to do anything much at all!!

Constance13 profile image
Constance13 in reply to PMRpro

I don't have to do anything at all either.😂 David does it all!😂😂

in reply to candy28

I have heard that threat works for some.

My husband has always washed dishes and never wanted a dishwasher. Now he cooks too because I'm often too tired by the evening, we take it in turns and I make sure we have ready meals in stock if I'm just not up to it. He doesn't like cooking but he has a few staples that he does well. Now we have the rest of the family with us he does 'our' washing up and our son in law does most of theirs. He'd really like a dishwasher so we might see if we can rejig the kitchen somehow to fit one in

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Louisepenygraig

Mine can do fried eggs and chips - he did manage better in the UK where he could buy pies and bacon but he'd struggle with bacon now even if we could get it!

Constance13 profile image
Constance13 in reply to Louisepenygraig

If I'm not up to it we do 'long distant cooking' He brings veg etc for me to prepare then I yell through instructions "turn that on at....., stir that one every four minutes, etc etc . That way I get the meals we both want.😂😂

Louisepenygraig profile image
Louisepenygraig in reply to Constance13

That sounds good. My husband is happy to help with prepping and taking things in and out of the oven but doesn't do too well with instructions

DorsetLady profile image
DorsetLadyPMRGCAuk volunteer in reply to Louisepenygraig

Are any husbands good at taking instructions?

Louisepenygraig profile image
Louisepenygraig in reply to DorsetLady

Probably not!

DorsetLady profile image
DorsetLadyPMRGCAuk volunteer in reply to Louisepenygraig

Mine certainly wasn’t! Well, he was to a certain extent in his Army days - but sure many would say “not very good!”

in reply to Louisepenygraig

Mine is only half size but fits 4 settings and a couple of pans. With its legs shortened ...they have screw in feet, they will fit under the draining board side of that cupboard . You want it near the cold water fitting, iwhich is DIY doable and I put a new joint on the waste pipe and bobs your uncle. I once plumbed a small washer under the sink in a rented place too. Oh if I wasn't self isolating 😉

To start with I thought you were talking about husbands!

I nearly edited it to say I didnt have oh with expandable legs?!
