I'm on the anti-viral medication now, 1 gram 3x a day. The opthamologist said to keep an 'eye' on my eye....any sharp pain beyond what I have now....go to the ED and have an IV of the anti-viral med. There are a few blisters right by my eye and the lid is swollen....I know you are all with me and truly appreciate your good thoughts!!!!
I'm talking a good game right now...and so appreciate everyone's input. I'll take all the good vibes an prayers you have. I'm going to put a cool cloth on it now...my cheek looks like a McIntosh apple~~we'll see what tomorrow and more anti-viral bring!!
I've canceled my week....it feels 'nasty' right now...I just want to get through it...get on the other side. There are lots of encouraging folks on this forum!! I'm so grateful~!
So sorry youβve got it but so glad youβre on the antivirals now. Shingles is one of these really nasty things that tends to hit you when youβre already down. Not fair at all. So not fair. As I said to you earlier my Dad had a bit of a rotten time with it but ultimately his eyesight wasnβt adversely affected so Iβve got my fingers crossed itβll be the same for you. Youβll maybe have to put your trip over here off for a wee while but weβll all still be here! And hopefully a big cuddle from Gus will help. π» Hugs and best wishes.
My thanks....naturally my 'good eye' is what concerns me. Gus has been VERY encouraging too....we shall be a lazy pair! Putting my trip off is a major disappointment....you never know..someday I just may make it. Keep those fingers crossed...and thanks for sharing about your Dad...π»xo Gus' Mom
So it was Shingles and horribly near your eye! You are getting the trials of Job at the moment. Oh Marilyn. What does the sharp pain in the eye signify - Shingles in the eye or GCA? Sounds like Shingles with the IV recommendation. Itβs enough to make anyone a nervous wreck. Your family do know about all this donβt they?
Thanks Jane! I'm on a substansial dose of an anti-viral med. My right eye is puffy with a few blisters around it. The pain in my face and head is from the shingles...she cautioned that if I felt it in my eye an IV of the anti-viral should protect my vision. It burns right now...but I've only had one gram of medicine~~hopefully after a full day of meds tomorrow ...I may have more blisters...but less swelling and pain. I'm pretty hopeful, the pain started Sunday night and this is just Tuesday...xo Thanks~~
Shingles is caused by a herpes virus yes - but not the Eppstein Barr virus (EBV). Shingles is caused by the same virus as chicken pox: HSV-3 or varicella-zoster. After infection causes chicken pox, the virus becomes dormant in nerve endings and may remain dormant for life. Or something may reactivate it and you develop shingles.
It is thought that everyone carries the EBV - but by no means everyone develops shingles even if they have had chicken pox. Correlation is not causation ...
Oh Grammy80, you have all the fortitude and strength shown us here. So this one will pass too. Very timely start of the anti virals. Big hugs from another Octo... Hang in there, life still has things to offer, and not all bad.
I havenβt been on in awhile Iam in the hospital right now with shingles and diverticulitis. On Iβv for both.the shingles antiviral and antibiotics for the other. I had the shingles shots to prevent this. Good news is I went to Boston for the speci
al Doppler scan and it was negative so I guess no gca for me. Happy about that but those 13 days of pred and my 4 back injections in a short time really weakened my immune system good.
I hope you recover fast. Shingles is no fun. I think the shingles shot (actually you get two spread apart ). Did shorten and strength of the disease
My goodness....how are you doing? How are those two ugly forces? My shingles are pretty dry except for one area and thankfully the blister on my eyelid is dry...pain is still with me but not as intense. My heart goes out to you...please let me know how you are. I'm so happy GCA is off the table...Boston is my old stomping grounds. Are you at Brigham Womens? I was fortunate enough to get a consult from there regarding my GCA....my prayers!!Take good careππ
I'm really just back at the computer.....certainly thinking of you. A friend who had shingles two years ago and had continuing pain, was given Gabapentin and got relief.....still takes it. I surely wish you the best.
Grammy, just reading this now. Glad they figured it out, but so sorry youβre going through this! Let me know if as a neighbor there is any assistance I can render!
Itβs a nasty virus isnβt it and can be very disfiguring. I hope it clears up quickly for you and you start to feel better soon. I remember the doc prescribing amotriptolene (?) it was brilliant for the pain and for getting a good nightβs sleep. I sometimes which I had some in the bathroom cabinet!
