I'm sorry I've not logged on for weeks, I had my flu jab yesterday and feeling terrible this morning, same happened last year, my arm still sore from that one.

Is there a better type for PMR patients?

You don’t say what type you had, so bit difficult to say if there is a better option.

There have been various posts on here over the last month or so regarding the flu jab - just type that into search box to bring them up.

Too late now as is done - but, as you had problems last year, it might have been sensible to ask the question before you had the jab.

Meanwhile take paracetamol, drink plenty of fluids and rest for a couple of days.

Hi,

I had my flu injection and was fine, thankfully, and have GCA.

My daughter has ME and was always advised not to have one but has booked one as her little boy is now at nursery school so she will be in more contact with bugs. She has booked a private one at Boots as she can then have more choice about when she has it done. I did not realise that you can choose which type to have. Have you any advice about what type she should ask for? Very many thanks, jenny

Hi,

I can’t answer personally, but I did find this which might help your daughter. It was written last year, but I guess its still relevant -

I posted about a month ago about my thoughts that PMR "started", or should I say reared its head, with a swollen knee a few days after the flu jab. Others had similar thoughts. I decided then not to have the jab and mentioned this to my doctor as I was about to go on holiday. She was ok about it, although she did not comment on whether this was sensible or not. She is incidentally a lot more informed about PMR than some GPs and is happy to listen to me about symptoms. She goes along with my ideas

about slow tapering, (as per your guidelines). I will see her tomorrow as I am due for blood test. Since reading the posts on this subject I will ask her about the under 65 jab as it seems wise to have one. However, being full of cold it might not be this week. I am due to go off again in a couple of weeks but I am doing brilliantly well on 7.5mg of pred. These are just thoughts for others in a similar situation. I am lucky as I do not have any other physical problems and my body has reacted well to the pred.

Good to hear you’re doing well and have an informed GP - and yes hold off the Flu jab until you have got over cold.

Thanks D L. Great job you people are doing. An important ingredient in the healing and improving process is peace of mind and reasdurance.

If it is any consolation the feeling awful is a sign that your immune system is doing what it should. You'd feel worse if you were to get the real flu!

I had mine this morning at surgery and was told I may feel a bit lousy- it’s happening but better than getting the full monty flu! Watching the rugby to distract myself! 🌸

May be fireworks at my daughter's next week - he's an England supporter, she likes NZ!

Well you know who I support....and both kids as well, despite or maybe because one lives in NZ.

I’m probably in the minority on here with all these Celts! ..but I don’t hold it against you...🤦🏻‍♀️😳

Hmm our lads over here in Ireland didn't do so well

PMRpro profile image

They did not - they seemed to have fallen apart compared to last year. I was really disappointed. Mind you - the ABs were on fire ...

The ABs were superb, and that is from someone who lives in Northern Ireland - they'll be very hard to beat.

That's what I'm hoping - but don't tell my SIL ;)

😂😂😂 I choose on family history and the hair on the back of my neck that goes up when I hear the Welsh anthem sung... Or a choir of Welsh singing full stop.

No - Wales at the moment, they were "my" team as a teenager. Mind you - since they seem to have taken leave of their brains, bit like Ireland ...

That foul was appalling - obviously a deliberate act. But Wales aren't taking advantage of the numbers enough.

Thank you all, I'm feeling better now after a double co-codomol and 2 aspirins. But I'll be sure to enquire next year.

I had the over 65 year old jab. My arm was sore for about two days and terrible headache. Took that to mean ,as PMRpro said, that my immune system working ok. No symptoms after two days. I have now to persuade my husband to rebook as he had a nasty cold when we should have had it done together. Wonderful to say too that I didn’t catch his cold!!

in reply toJackoh

It does concern me I had no response at all from my under 65 jab! Hopefully I will avoid having to find out.

Jackoh profile image
Jackoh in reply to

I didn’t get this response last year Poopadoop- no reaction at all so I wouldn’t be too concerned if no reaction. I hadn’t been expecting one at all and different folk on here seem to relate different experiences with the same jab.

in reply toJackoh

Thanks for reassurance. They didn't use eggs this year so could be that. ☺️

Yes I had a reaction to my flu jab which lasted a couoke of days. Felt terrible.Obviuosly because our immune systems are not normal whilst on steroids.

I had flu injection yesterday and feel no different. I have both GCA and PMR diagnosed Nov 2017. Tapering is more of an issue for me just now - currently at 7mg Pred.

I had my under 65 flu jab on Friday and no reaction at all, not even sore at injection site, I usually get a sore arm. But the vaccine was administered slowly, don’t know if that makes any difference ??

I had the regular flu jab (not senior one) a week ago. Just today I am feeling better, and my left arm is not hurting anymore. It took longer than expected.

If it's any consolation, two doctor friends of mine, who have had the jab but no health issues, have complained of feeling a bit rubbish this year after their jabs. One aged 54 and the other aged 23.

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS in reply toLovebikes

I am interested in hearing about a doctor who is only 23?

Lovebikes profile image
Lovebikes in reply toHeronNS

You are right the 23 year old is still training. The point I was meaning to make was that they were only being vaccinated because they were health professionals, rather than because they had any health issues.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toHeronNS

In the UK you would meet F1s that age.

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS in reply toPMRpro

What's an F1?

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toHeronNS

The first year out of medical school - used to be called a junior houseperson, F2s were senior housepersons ... It's the 2 years working before full registration

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS in reply toPMRpro

Hmm, interesting. So they finish school at eighteen and within five years they are let loose on patients who probably think these are fully qualified persons looking after them? I wonder how that works here? The man who didn't think my leg was broken had to telephone me in the morning to tell me to come in again because the resident (which I think is a newly qualified specialist?) had seen something on the x-ray he'd missed. Maybe he was the equivalent of an F1? He was also the guy who tried to prescribe me 50 oxycontin tablets.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toHeronNS

In the UK students are on the wards right from the start of med school pre-clinical. Even as F1s they aren't solely responsible for reading x-rays and stuff - the radiologist does that as well. And they ARE fully qualified - just haven't had a lot of practical experience. Reading an x-ray of a new injury can be difficult - even consultants can get it wrong!

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS in reply toPMRpro

Well as someone who was on the other end of that thank goodness the x-rays were reviewed in the morning by a person who knew what to look for, I needed an MRI to confirm and of course the fact it was a fracture and not a sprain made all the difference to our holiday plans. Bye-bye New Zealand. :(

I discussed the jab with my GP and she said in her opinion it was unlikely to makes much difference whether I had the under 65 or over 65 jab. I had the over 65 a week ago and haven’t even had a sore arm which I have usually had previously. Seems I’ve been lucky

Jancorb profile image

Thankfully I'm feeling much better today, my arm only a little sore.

I have been having 'flu jabs for the last 30/40 years and remember in the early days you always had to wait for 5 minutes in the GP's waiting room after the jab, and before going home. We were always advised at the same time, to give the area of your arm where the needle went in a good massage with the palm of your hand. I can't remember the reason given for this ( someone will tell me!) but I can honestly say that I have never experienced pain in the arm, but do know others who have, my dear wife for one! She does not give her arm a good massage and she always suffers discomfort and pain for a day or so following the jab. We have both had our jabs several weeks ago and my wife has had a very nasty cold, while I've been fine!!! Sorry! Next time try giving your arm a good massage immediately following the jab.

I did not have the flue jab last year and won't this year. In 2017 (assured it ok with steroids)I had the jab and 10 days later was in hospital with pneumonia! (It says by unspecified organism!) Had pneumonia jab in previous years. Then in Feb 2018 was in hospital again with Pulmonary Embolism. So, for me, I will stay clear. Managed last winter, no probs.

I understand there are 2 jabs. One for over 65s and those under.
