Steroids and sickness

I have been on steroids for three years now with GCA and got down to 1mg and last month been diagnosed with PMR and up to 20mgs but now down to 12 1/2 mgs , In the night I have had a bad sickness bug and this morning I don’t feel like eating anything can I miss my steroids or should I take them on an empty stomach.Thanks

Oh dear, sick bugs are horrible. I think you need to get medical advice on this one, especially if you can’t take anything orally at the moment. A few hours late maybe but you also need to know that you’re absorbing it fully. Pred on an empty already irritated stomach could be bad too and set you back again. The reason for all this is to avoid an adrenal crisis which is serious. The doc might decide to give you a injection to tide you over.

Seems a shame you were put back to 20mg. PMR is often a symptom of GCA but is not apparent until you get to a low dose. If you had been fine on low doses you would probably also have been fine going back to 10mg at the most and possibly even less.

Do hope the bug goes quickly - but in general you should be fine for 24 hours and no pred. Much more and I would worry a bit - but loads of people have forgotten a dose and just got stiff and uncomfortable.

Thanks Pharmacist rang and said the same if I feel better by lunchtime to take them if not this evening but I won’t worry if I have to miss today’s again thank you

Hi,

I’m a big fan of the banana. It’s soothing on the stomach and has more nutrients than a cracker. Eating small bites may help your stomach lining and help with taking prednisone.
