I have no idea if this is PMR related, but I was in the beach this afternoon walking down to the sea when I had an excruciating pain in my left calf muscle, Never had it before. I could not bear my weight on the sand but I could walk better on solid ground.
Anyone experienced this? The 80 steps back up to the apartment felt like scaling a mountain...

Hi,
Were you barefoot? You may have pulled a muscle? However, with it being so painful, is it hot over the area of pain? If so, l’d seek Medical Advice, as it could be a blood clot?
I was. It was on a deep sandy beach. I couldn't get my footing, then the sudden excruciating pain. I"m going home to Cheshire tomorrow so will call in at the local hospital minor injuries unit. X
Might be referred pain from over stressing the muscles or tendons in the ankle/calf dealing with unstable ground that are not used to working. It can be really painful. As has been said, persistent pain with or without swelling needs to be checked.
Could it be a rupture in the calf muscle? I did it once just stepping off the kerb to cross the road. It was excruciating when I tried to step forward - otherwise not so bad.
It may not need hospital checks if you didn't obviously go over on your leg or fall , just needs keeping an eye on and if it happens again mentioning to the GP , unless you are still feeling some sort of injury of course.
This happens to me all the time on the beach or on different surfaces , or if I try and walk too much after along time without a walk.
A sort of cramp like pain , but harsher , like a needle vertically through the calf , is that right??
It is usually a sign of muscle weakening , your muscle has probably lost some strength and the circulation of oxygen to it isn't as strong because you may not have been doing that type of calf muscle intensive activity.
Putting some warmth on it or soaking in the tub and massaging it, and then building up some calf muscle exercises even in a chair to keep them strong when you can't do too much , and warming up your muscles and stretching a bit before walking usually helps me , it might help you too.
Obviously , if you think it might be to do with flying , or there might be a chance of a DVT having it checked before your flight , maybe with medical staff at the airport might be an idea, and if you haven't got any get some compression socks or tights for the return trip home.
Take care x
I remembered this post a while back.. might be totally different but may be worth a look..
Though deep sand is hard on the muscles, I found the tilt of the firm sand part of the beach near the water very hard on my ankles. My beach walks have been shorter since PMR.
