Reiki?

Has anyone tried Reiki for relief of PMR symptoms? Indeed I am more interested in improving energy levels as adrenals are suppressed. I understand it is helpful for sleep but could it unlock adrenals even a little?

Hi

I used to do Reiki

You have nothing to lose by giving it a go

If nothing else it will give you a feeling of well being .

Dont be ripped of though so many pay a fortune to receive attunements to practice Reiki and charge a fortune for a treatment .

The truth is anyone can do it as its universal energy healing .

Look for a Reiki share group in your area and it will be a minimal fee and you can learn how to do it yourself .

As a medical scientist - I doubt any adrenal effect somehow. But like everything - many complementary therapies help relaxation in some way so can't be pooh-poohed too much.

It is a case of if you can afford it try it and see if it helps, but don't go in expecting miracles and don't get ripped off. I find chiropractice techniques helpful: my orthopod in Germany had been trained in them at medical school and used them in his mainstream medical practice. In the UK one local one would tell people they needed regular appointments for years, told one friend she would need them for life, and flogged you very expensive supplements too. The same friend tried Bowen therapy - and got better results in 3 sessions! Any good Bowen therapist will say that - if it will help, you will know something is different in up to 3 sessions. If there isn't, you needn't keep spending on it like that. Top-ups every 6 months or a year may help with a chronic condition, but you don't need it weekly.

Yes, Bowen worked for me and if I had listened to you earlier, I would not have wasted 18 months in a wheelchair, with zimmer frame and walking stick. I still see Joanna at least every 6 months.

Glad you generally approve of chiropractic, my son is one! Sadly lives in Norway but advises me on exercises etc. Including a good diet which he has very definite views on! Anyway .. I did use Bowen a couple of years ago & found it beneficial though never understood why. My practitioner moved away sadly but my new neighbour practices Bowen & 2 of my golf friends think she is wonderful. As you say they suggest that after 3-5 sessions you are not getting the benefit you should give up. I thought Reiki might open up some channels to help but seems most people here do not think so. Interesting. Thank you

Hi,

Have a look at related posts - it has been discussed before. Like many alternative treatments it works fir some but not others. The only way is to give it a try.

I do think that these therapies definitely have their place in aiding well- being and therefore supporting recovery. Stress is our great enemy and any therapy that offers relaxation is bound to assist. Let us know if you try it. I did mindfulness and a few weeks of meditation training, both therapies helped me and the lessons learnt stayed with me.

Thank you but I have realised I was thinking of reflexology! I did an 8 week mindfulness course 2 years ago but haven’t been good at keeping it up. On the whole I really enjoyed it.

It's the sheer joy of handing my body to someone else to worry about for an hour that helped me when I could afford massages, kinesiology, reiki etc. But the only one that benefitted me in the days after was massage. It got the lumps and bumps gone. But for me it has to be a sports Therapist who deals with injuries and upset bodies.

Yes I agree, I have found a lovely Polish masseur recently who really knows what she is doing & had no flare up afterwards

When you get one who understands it is worth hanging onto them.

My take on it is do it to feel good not because it’s the sure thing to cure a specific problem. For a start we’re all different and there’s never a short cut in my experience because healing is multifaceted and will happen in its own time.

Whoops I have just realised I was actually thinking if reflexology not Reiki! So sorry brain fog!! I had one session many years ago & always wished I had continued with it. But slightly afraid it may aggravate my condition.i wonder if it helps the adrenals?

I was a subject for a neighbour who was training to do reflexology for animals! I enjoyed it and found it relaxing but I can't say it did a lot for any health problems I had.

But it all comes down to the same thing in the end if you can afford whatever it is: does it help YOU? In some, any way. The benefit doesn't have to be measureable or obvious - it may be you realise you sleep better or are more relaxed.

I think I have tried an awful lot of alternatives. I have found the two things that have really helped is my brilliant osteopath and having a leg massage. I have just come back from one, fabulous. Some of the others were a total waste of time and money and some people really do seem out to rip you off. Reiki did nothing for me although it may be fine for some people. There have been some rather luke warm discussions on this board about it.

Did you try reflexology?

Sort of, the person who did it was doing a foot massage and said that she was a reflexologist but I am not sure she was that good, she told me all the different pressure points on my feet, but I reckon she had just learnt it off a chart. I do love having my feet massaged though without the reflexology even. Do you have reflexology?

Only once years ago, I enjoyed it I think though some parts of my feet were quite painful & that was before PMR! I know quite a bit about it I just wondered if it was helpful to the adrenals, I shall ask around.

I cannot see why it should help normally as the cortisol is being produced by the steroids. Possibly when one reduces to the lower figures it could help. No one on this board has raved about it though. There is an adrenal pressure point on the other hand. When you had reflexology did they do anything on your hands too?

I have adrenal suppression & back to 5 mg pred. Just had a thought it might help the adrenals but obviously not from the feet. I think she did treat my hands but it was a long time ago. I didn’t know there was an adrenal pressure point there.
