Not sure what is going on, I'm back on the post. Today I woke up with pain in my fingers, palms and wrists big time. I am still on 10mg of prednisone, have extended the dose dr. said stay on 2 weeks I've stayed on 3 wks. + , if it's not my hands, wrists, it's my elbows, shoulders................should my prednisone dose be higher???? I am still trying to figure this out???? and it has been almost 8 mths.???

Can I ask where does PMR come from???? What brought this on????

Hi,

"Can I ask where does PMR come from???? What brought this on????"

Good questions, unfortunately no simple answers.

PMR is one of many auto immune systems illnesses where your body attacks itself.

Why you, I or anyone gets it, its not 100% clear, but very often appears following a period of stress - either job or family related or from an operation or accident, the body decides its taken too much of a battering and rebels - not a scientific answer, but as good as any!

I think you just have to accept you have it, it's a long term chronic illness (8 months is very early days), take the correct amount of medication required, look after yourself the best you can and just get on with it. That's not easy I know, especially at the beginning, but that's what gets you through.

Sorry if that's not the answer you want, but there is no simple answer.

As for your current situation, you have gone below the level of Pred you need to control the symptoms at this particular time. If 10mg is not doing anything for your symptoms, then you might like to try 12.5mg for a few days.

Please re-read my link I sent to your first post - attached again for ease. healthunlocked.com/pmrgcauk...

What had you been doing the last couple of days? Is this both hands? All fingers? And is your doctor sure this is PMR? Or "just" PMR?

I had elbow, wrist and hand pain for the 5 years of PMR without pred. It was worst in my dominant hand and it was assumed it was RSI. In fact it was due to the PMR. But it isn't really a typical manifestation. It may have been RS3PE syndrome but who knows.

After 8 weeks of disabling pain which my doctor kept putting down to other things, (wish I'd thought of a video!) I woke one morning with terrible pain in my hands and fingers and had to soak them in hot water before I could straighten my fingers even a little. The large tendons in my palms were very raised and swollen. This alerted my GP to doing a blood test and he prescribed pred. The pain and stiffness went very quickly but even now the tendons are more raised than normal and I get cramp a lot in my fingers.

I do wonder, if someone could devise a questionnaire we would all do, how many symptoms would be found to be typical of PMR after all?!

Ach! I just had a ‘hand’ issue, new for me. I was 5mg for 19 days. Have had to go back up. Not wanting to disturb my adrenals too much, trying to keep in physiological dose, I’m trying 7 with some success. Have to say I felt systemically awful alongside the hands.

Good luck!

I have issues with both hands which was initially thought to be down to the PMR but tests showed it to be carpal tunnel syndrome, which is apparently quite common in people with PMR, so I have been lead to believe.

My Carpal Tunnel symptoms are abating on their own. 5 months post pred.

I do rub and flex my hands/wrists a lot.

I do not have PMR. I have a rare lung disease. Sorry, but I cannot speak to your illness. I have been on prednisone for 2-1/2 years for my illness. It's the only med that helps me. I started at a high dose of 60 mg and worked down to 2-1/2 mg. You need to address your questions to your doctor. Perhaps a higher dose would work for you. Sorry, I'm unable to help. Janet R.
