Hello. May I ask if anyone gets oral thrush continually from the prednisilone. I am now on 15 mg and still have weakness in the legs and shakes. Have been on preds since octon2019 for GCA. Am also on Azothioprine 100mg for the last 6 weeks

Thrush is not unusual amongst patients on immunosuppressant drugs - pred is enough for some people, adding aza will just increase the risk.

Ask your GP for suitable medication. Once the thrush is treated, immediately start using a new toothbrush as the fungus hangs around and will be reintroduced to your mouth. Some people sterilise their toothbrushes but I don't remember the details. Yoghurt often helps avoid thrush as well.

Baby bottle steriliser (eg Milton or store’s own brand) works for sterilising brushes. Useful for make up brushes too.

I did early days on high doses, but a couple of courses of medication sorted it out. Fortunately never returned.

As PMRpro advises - see doctor.

I've tried Nystatin and a tablet treatment (can't remember which), also Corsodyl and Peroxyl... am on MXT as well as Pred. Fed up with grey-green tongue, dog breath and painful wheals on eating berries etc... ugh. Which meds sorted it out for you?

Hi

Nystatin- but it took a couple of treatment/bottles. However wasn’t on MTX - that may cause problems as well, I don’t know.

As others have suggested - probiotic drinks or tablets may help along with yogurt.

But it’s miserable whilst you have it - so hope it soon clears!

Thanks DL, will try Nystatin again. Yes yogurt!

Hi, l’ve had very bad Thrush caused by Chemo Drugs & it lingered on long afterwards so l think the Pred was contributing to it as well.

I had every treatment, tablets, suspensions to swirl around my mouth, gels to slush around my mouth.

You definitely need something to clear it up from your GP & then follow your Meds with Live Yogurt everyday. Ditch your old toothbrush & change them often.

I eventually discovered the culprit & it was a ‘Sugar Free’ based Medication that was causing it!.......

I eat yogurt every morning after my Pred & other Meds.

You need to see the dr. Sometimes one hit will shift it but sometimes you need several if its really dug in. Make sure you have a prebiotic diet and probiotics to build up good environment.
