The musculoskeletal side effects from this class of antibiotics has just been discussed on You And Yours on Radio 4. If you want to listen again online, it discusses the under reporting of problems. I mention it because it has come up a few times on this forum when it can mimic a flare.

Just saying on another thread: German medical programme a couple of days ago was saying to use a "Water cure" for UTIs first (bicarb in water first and then 3-4 litres of water in the following 3 hours, a large glass every 15 mins). And to refuse quinolone abx - they are only supposed to be used when all else has failed. Not first line.

I thought they were to be banned.

I tried a massive water intake at first signs and it worked. However, I broke my no salt rule and ate a couple of bananas so I wouldn’t become depleted of sodium and potassium. Well, that was my unscientific plan anyway. Felt quite sick by the end.

They did warn it was hard work!! But at least water tastes OK - unlike colonoscopy prep that OH really struggled with some weeks ago!!

I am never having a colonoscopy again! The bowel prep is intolerable. It smells and tastes like methylated spirit! Plus mine was ginger and I hate ginger. Don't know about bowel prep since I spewed the second lot up! No wonder your OH struggled. Never again for me. I can taste it as I write and it's been two years since I had it!

Mine wasn't that bad - but I did mine at home and they tell you to use apple juice. He was in hospital. Plus at the time he had some gastrointestinal problems which slowed it all down - so he was told to drink more...

My wife is an endoscopy sister and my daughter a bowel cancer screening nurse. They issue bowel prep on a daily basis. Their best advice is make the prep up cold. Add a teaspoon of vanilla essence or lime juice if you find it salty. Adding squash is preferable to apple juice. If you are still struggling try by-passing your taste buds by using a straw.

Squash? What's that? ;) I don't live in the UK and it doesn't get a passport!

I quite agree. I had 3 attempts at the preparation and was so ill with the stuff I was unable to go to the appointment for the colonoscopy! My GP has said forget it and wrote to consultant - result a CT scan & MRI, which highlighted minor problems which I now manage.

Not a good idea for those with heart problems. My fluid intake is limited to something like 6 cups of liquid a day to keep the circulation light.
