It s there - honest!

Also, I am having a dexa scan on Wednesday for bone density. Can anyone tell me what's involved please?

DXA scan you just lie on a table, you are placed in an exact position and pictures taken of various bones, using very low dose radiation. The exact position is very important as in follow up scans in the future they will want you to be in exactly the same position again to get an accurate comparison. You can't wear anything with metal. Where I go I don't even have to put on a jonny shirt, just wear clothes with no metal at all. But each hospital probably has its own protocol. I seem to remember it doesn't take too long. They'll likely measure your height and ask a few questions about medicines you take (like prednisone dosage) as this factors into your risk assessment.

P.S. I found the tablet! Oh, wait, it wasn't a black one.

Sort of browny-black?

Yes. Nice countertop by the way. But I suppose I shouldn't start discussing decor. :D

It would be even easier if they were bigger than a sand grain.

I had a dexa scan in November. Just as HeronNS says, easy peasy, in and out in less than 10 minutes. Didn't even have to get undressed ! Nothing to worry about. Hope all goes well for you.

Morning Oxford

Just as Heron said, just wear comfy clothes & no metal.

You may have not heard my story from my first Dexa, the Height Plate was jammed but she asked me to stand by it anyway & said l was 5’4” - l told her l was 5’7” she said it didn’t matter!.....

Two years on, I stood to get measured & guess what l’m 5’7” Oh? Exclaimed the Radiographer, β€œyou’ve grown 3”?” l explained the incident from last time, which she didn’t believe! So l said l’d leave it with her to discover how I’d grown 3” πŸ€”

I had my height & weight taken twice within an hour!!

But did you grow? πŸ˜‚

in reply to

Alas no! But the fantasy persisted! I think it depended on whether I took my shoes off or not! Same with my coat & keys weightwise!!

I've shrunk nearly 2 inches!

in reply to scats

I would say an inch for myself! But on the credit side it's more than compensated by waist growth circumference!! You win some & ................

Since when?

Ages since I was measured, always assumed I was the same hight. Thinking about I could even have been a teenager. I hadn't thought of it like that, good point. As my spine was OK I put it down to weak muscles preventing me from standing upright.

You couldn't make it up could you! Unbelievable! πŸ˜ŸπŸ€”πŸ™„

And, height is an important measurement in Osteoporosis, what if it had been the other way round! She must have puzzled over it later πŸ€”

I take my tablets while I'm still in bed so sometimes the smallest ones slip through my fingers so I have the problem of finding tiny white tablets in white sheets! Sometimes I never find them.

As others have said the dexa scan is no problem at all, no undressing and it doesn't take very long. Let us know how you get on.

The image shows the person lying flat - but you may also have to lie with your legs resting on a big cushion to make right angles at hips and knees. The position is important and is usually not painful but may be a bit strange.

Thanks PMRpro. That was a really useful link. πŸ™‚

I also had my feet clamped, for the first part of the scan, in a certain position to stop me moving - only took seconds - then the sponge cube under the knees to ease the back - very comfortable - don’t let them start until you’re comfortable. Neither a problem. Took about 10 mins. You’ll be fine.

I find, with the coated tablets, they are difficult to keep hold of. They slip through my fingers and roll across the floor. When I find them they are inveriably standing on edge, no wonder they roll so far!

I had this scan a fortnight ago - no big deal! You lie on a table and stay still and are scanned twice - in between you have to move your legs to a specific position. It is not intrusive and you could easily fall asleep - some people have!

I often have this problem; I think my countertop has even more black in it than yours. The dexascan is really straightforward and painless, nothing to worry about. You just lie down and a scan is passed over you, couple of years since I've had one now but I don't remember anything complicated or painful.

Thank you. I am very reassured and won't let it keep me awake tonight.
