Weekend looks dire but next week is drier. Planning on Stonehenge on Monday. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Well if the weather is anything like Dorset today ...it will be mugs of hot chocolate in front of the fire/wood burner/ whatever..

I managed to get my bins out last night, but fortunately a friendly neighbour chased them round the close for me this morning and brought them home....could have been a sequel to Blearyeyed β€œBin” saga yesterday!

Enjoy Wiltshire- we used to live a few fields away from Stonehenge and could walk there ....before the days of fencing everything off.......And no I’m not that old, thank you very much!

Enjoy!

One of the joys here - no bins, just bin bags that are put out on the balcony until full and then set out the night before collection day. If is is horrible - you just keep it until next week... No smells because all organic waste goes in a bin at the back of the house and a strapping 6ft+ volunteer puts it out every week. And we discovered this week that that bin will ALWAYS be collected on the assigned day even if it is a holiday.

Telian profile image
Telianβ€’ in reply toPMRpro

Same here no bins like you just different bags for recycling, textiles and food - and no break for bank holidays.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassadorβ€’ in reply toTelian

No bags for recycling - DIY here. Glass bottles, cans and paper can be put in containers in almost every carpark. Plastic bottles and the rest of things that can be recycled you have to take to the recycling yard yourself - if you put them in the general rubbish you have to pay more as you need more bags. Most people collect the stuff and go once a month or so.

I remember years ago when we lived in Wales I had a Dutch friend and she did not think we had such a high standard of cleanliness and tidiness as the Dutch had.

27 years ago we took my mother to France, to the Loire, with our caravan. We landed back at Dover and heading back to Scotland she was very quiet for some time and then suddenly said "The UK is a very dirty country isn't it?" We'd lived in Germany for 10 years and although she had refused to come to see us, she did come at the Easter when OH came over to pack up the house, I was still there with the girls in school. She went back on holiday the following year too. And I had to agree with her - compared with Germany and France and now here, the UK exudes an image of being grubby and untidy.

Constance13 profile image
Constance13β€’ in reply toPMRpro

I suppose it depends where you live in most countries. Being in a tourist area here (Germany) things are immaculate, but parts of the industrial areas are rather different.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassadorβ€’ in reply toConstance13

But even supposedly "nice" areas can be very scruffy in the UK.

Constance13 profile image
Constance13β€’ in reply toPMRpro

I haven’t been back for 5 years now and, as you know, haven’t lived there for 48 years. Don’t suppose I would recognise half of my favourite places. I know the Cotswolds have changed (where we lived) - it’s sooo full of people and some of the really lovely villages are more like towns now!😟

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassadorβ€’ in reply toConstance13

It's the town centres that are worst - empty and boarded up shops all over the place which contributes to the scruffy look. There was an article in the Guardian recently about the percentages of shops that have gone - even Sheffield was badly affected. It is less in the south needless to say...

Constance13 profile image
Constance13β€’ in reply toPMRpro

Sad!

DorsetLady profile image
DorsetLadyPMRGCAuk volunteerβ€’ in reply toPMRpro

Yes, but not necessarily the South West!

York54 profile image
York54β€’ in reply toConstance13

The Cotswolds are busy but still very pretty. If you go out of school holidays they are not too bad. We often go , it takes us 45 minutes to drive. We took our Ozzy friends in August, it was heaving in Bourton on the water!! You just have to choose your time!!πŸ˜ƒ

Constance13 profile image
Constance13β€’ in reply toYork54

True. We usually visited the surrounding villages on Mondays or Tuesdays, before 9.30 am or after 6 pm. Much quieter then.πŸ˜€

Can be, not always!! I quite enjoy living in the UK!!

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassadorβ€’ in reply toYork54

Have you lived anywhere else?

York54 profile image
York54β€’ in reply toPMRpro

No, never wanted to. We have done quite a bit of travelling though. Each to their own I suppose!πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassadorβ€’ in reply toYork54

Ah well - going on holiday somewhere isn't quite the same as living there permanently. You might have been pleasantly surprised :)

York54 profile image
York54β€’ in reply toPMRpro

I enjoy being near my friends and family, it would take a lot to make me give that up at 65!!! I'll stick with the travelling and adventures!! πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜†

How many times have you been following a car here and suddenly rubbish has been thrown out of the window. Recently my son complained of a big car next to his in our local Waitrose car park and the owner was busy cleaning it out and leaving the rubbish on the ground for someone else to clear up. I don't know if you are aware but the Daily Mail has recently mounted a big "clear up the plastic" in relation to all the rivers and oceans being affected. We also suffer from fly-tipping which spoils the countryside.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassadorβ€’ in reply toprunus

Oh yes, aware of most of what goes on in the UK! My personal hate is people emptying the ashtray on the side of the road and just chucking dog ends on the floor...

Those were the days! Holland isn’t so clean these days.

prunus profile image
prunusβ€’ in reply toConstance13

That is disappointing to read. The Dutch used to have a reputation for cleanliness.

Constance13 profile image

I know. Sad!

We do have the glass, shoes and clothing containers in most supermarket car parks as well. If we want to get rid of furniture that’s not good enough to sell the council will take it for Β£7.50 and Β£5 subsequent items at the same pick-up. We’ve a long way to go in street cleaning!

Ps: my granddaughter’s boyfriend, recently qualified paramedic in Oz, has been shortlisted for interviews in London and Tasmania. Still waiting to hear from Queensland, his first choice - those they’re not interested in heard before Christmas Don’t they take a long time - he’s been waiting since November.

Stonehenge has become too commercial. I remember when my children were young you could get up to the stones and walk round them. There just wern't the number of people there.

Yes it has. Can remember doing same - as a child and a mum. My brother always used to go over every summer solstice and take pictures.

But like al heritages sites I guess it’s needs protecting. Shame really.

Constance13 profile image
Constance13β€’ in reply toDorsetLady

It was great when you could just walk round Stonehenge, wasn’t it? No barriers, no coffee shop, etc etc and if you chose your time right - no tourists. Those were the days.

Soggy and damp after a wet and windy dog walk - this pic is a tonic on such a day and a reminder that we are just 6 weeks or so away from putting clocks forward! Yay! (Please don't correct me on how many days, weeks, hours etc if I'm not exact but let me dream on....)
