I know others will agree with this recommendation: Dr. Hughes at St.Peter's Hospital Chertsey. He is my 4th Rheumy and I am very happy with him. He listens and treats you like a human being! He sees a lot of those of us whose journey hasn't been straightforward and so is quite the expert!
Just thought I would update you. I asked for a second opinion and got to see Dr Hughes in 4 weeks on the NHS. Well done NHS
What a great Dr he us. So knowledgeable got straight down to the issue, clear explanation , clear way ahead. Basically I am 18 months into PMR and doing well. Was on steroids for 3 months then tapered off onto Etoricoxib- he didn’t know why as should have stayed on steroids. My bloods show a slight ? On whether it could turn into RA but have not got that atm and the longer I go on without any symptoms less likely. Had bloods done again, told loosing a bit of weight would help 🙈 we all know that. Then to take the Etoricoxib as and when I need it. So just gone 4 days without anything and pretty good Thank you suzy1959 for the brilliant recommendation. If anyone else needs good advice go to this guy. Thank you PMRGCAUK. X
I see Dr Pamela Mangat at the Royal Free Hospital and find her very thorough and empathetic. However the NHS rheumatology clinics have been cut back there so you would probably have a long wait for an appointment.
I have my first appointment today with the same recommendation as Suzy1959. He was recommended to me by a consultant friend plus a PMR patient
Hello Debbie - Sorry to take a while to reply but I've only just seen your post. If you're looking in South London, I would recommend Dr Natalie Horwood who's a consultant at Croydon University Hospital. She also works privately with BMI Healthcare at Shirley Oaks Hospital which is where I saw her after 4 months of pain and no progress with a diagnosis. I found her to be very sensitive and sympathetic and completely non-patronising. Sadly, my GP wouldn't refer me to her as an NHS patient as, according to her, they 'managed' the illness in the practice. Happily, I've since moved and have a different GP! I can give you more information if you want - just private message me.
After many recommendations from this site I travelled from Edinburgh to see Dr Hughes two weeks ago. Very understanding man, explains things knowledgeably, listens carefully to you. There’s no miracle cure as we all know but he helped me make a plan so I can hopefully progress as I’d become stuck and wasn’t presenting very typically (whatever that is 😬)
Started hydroxychloroquine a week ago to help debilitating inflammation in my left knee. Feel stable at the moment and no horrible side effects yet! Dr Hughes came up with all this and has written to my GP and rheumatologist here in Edinburgh who were both very encouraging of me seeking another opinion.
Good luck if you go see him. He treats you like a human being.
