I used to - both plain and enteric coated versions. There is no MEDICAL reason - unless you include the potential for gastric irritation.

Thanks! and oh good! I don't seem to have any stomach trouble from it. ! I eat pretty closely to taking the pred but not always.

Pharmacists suggest that a glass of milk is enough.

This article says significant increased risk of GI bleeding is only found in hospitalized patients. In others there is an increased risk but, it's not statistically significant. bmjopen.bmj.com/content/4/5...

If I were to do this I would definitely not lie down again after taking the pred.

Hope article’s not going to worry those that take it early hours!

Don't those people sensibly eat a little yoghurt at the same time?

I take mine with a glass of milk when I wake up and then go back to sleep for an hour or two (depends what time I actually wake up). That way the Pred gets a chance to work before I jump 😉 out of bed. No problems gastric wise so far, although it also take Ranatidine instead of Omeperazole now.

Is there a problem with omeprazol and prednisone?????

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toyogabonnie

Omeprazole has some unpleasant side effects for some people and is associated with osteoporosis when used long term. Ranitidine (Zantac) does near enough the same thing as a PPI but by a different mechanism so had different side effects and hasn't been associated as much with osteoporosis. There will be an effect because of the reduction in acid but doesn't seem as bad.

Not that I’m aware of. I had to change because I am pretty sure long term use of Omeprazole contributed to my developing osteoporosis. ☹️

I rarely take it. only when I am not EATING RIGHT!!!! haha. junk food = heartburn. so the solution is to eat right! Funny I can't realize that and do it all the time!

Me too. I take when I get up to use the washroom usually between 4-6am. I simply put my meds on night stand next to a frozen yoghurt tube and glass of water. That way I don’t have to go downstairs in middle of the night.

I wake up with very little stiffness or pain when I take it in this fashion. Good till about 9 or 10 pm.

I don’t want to take the chance of getting gastric issues. I also don’t like the eat early morning. I have my first food around 11 and take my tabs then

Dear yogabonnie,

Personally I WOULDN'T recommend this, at all! Admittedly I AM on 'other Drugs' to, but I was advised to always eat after taking Prednisolone. The Enteric Coated tablets are less irritant, but I still wouldn't advise it. Sorry but you did ask.

Kindest regards anyway,

AndrewT

My pred says take with food and I assume there is a reason for it.

Hi, I take my preds between 4 a nd5 am. With a little greek yogurt and honey(prepared the night before) and never had any problems.

Yogurt does not need to be ice cold.

Preds on empty stomach can cause problems.

Hope this helps you out.

I have taken it on an empty stomach for the past 2 years. It depends on the individual and their predisposition to irritation of the stomach.

I take mine with just water followed by coffee. I don't usually eat until afternoon. Never seem to have issues.

I take mine with some hard cheese at 2am. You won’t notice if you just have coffee and water but you won’t absorb it so well into the bloodstream.
