DEXASCAN SORTED

Phoned up yesterday. Got a cancellation for 9.55 a.m. today. On time, lovely technician & done in less than 15 mins. Straightforward spine & hip. No tunnel or difficult manoeuvres, normal clothes with no metal. Hope the result goes as well. I don't want to take A.Acid. if I can do without.

Well done that was painless then! Did you go private or was GP involved? I must get round to doing this. Hope all is OK.

Scats it came through my last NHS Rhumy appointment when I asked for it rather than take A.Acid. or another alternative.(Bit of a stand off!) Unsure, but I would have thought your GP could refer you! It's got to worth knowing how the bones are standing up before taking unnecessary meds.

I want to get the scan just chicken about facing the doctor, don't like confruntation!

in reply toscats

I'm not one for direct confrontation either. It does't seem to work well with people in a more powerful position than yourself! Shouldn't be a confrontation issue anyway should it with a doc but I know what you mean. Is there anyone who could go with you? It could make a huge difference to your confidence & maybe make the doc listen.

My husband would come but he would take over, I'd be even more uncomfortable. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to think I'm up to it today and get an appointment rather than have to make appointments ahead of time and not know how you'll feel on the day.

Exactly!

Just your husbands "silent presence" could make all the difference maybe! Plus the odd glare or so if was going pear shaped!

I was told that it would be 4-6 weeks before the results would be with my doctor.

The actual procedure was lying on a bed while the arm of a machine moved over my body, especially my hips. At one point I had my legs over a foam cube, which I found really comfortable. If you have no metal in your clothing you can just wear your own things. My head was out in the open - I found this much nicer than the MRI submarine.

I will face the Alendronic Acid battle even if my results are perfect because I am a number, not a name. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hi Scats

Simply say ‘Do you think it would be beneficial if l had a Dexa Scan before starting AA?’ Works if he agrees! If he says No ask him why?

I bet you’ll get your referral!....

Hi Pepperdoggie,I have a Dexa scan on Sunday 23rd September'18.I didn't ask for one,my GP said he was ordering one,as I fractured T12&2ribs for good measure, after falling over backwards on a rolled up carpet, due to moving home!!..I've already had L4/L5&S1removed 26yrs ago,due to lifting patients,post-op theatre, yes I was a nurse.Couldn't believe what I'd done, until I was x-rayed&the girls went and got my x-ray's read with the boss,I'd worked there, until I retired,he said fracture at T12&the disc was wedging &I'd lost an inch in height(I started laughing)then crying!!!..the receptionist rang a week later from my surgery&said my GP wanted to see me regarding my x-ray's,it was then he prescribed Alendronic Acid, ect, incase of me having OP,I won't take it, until I know for sure(think it's a foregone conclusion, but there you go)..sorry for rambling on!..I do have PMR!!.What a life??😂😂

in reply toRouty

Think you are right to be wary of it. I haven't read much in it's favour. Can make the bones more brittle if you take it for an extended period I believe! I take enough tablets for other conditions without adding another one. Sorry to hear of your fall. Sounds painful plus the shock of falling backwards. I was lucky not to break anything on my recent fall, fortunately I hit my head!!!

Great. !! So glad you got in so easily! NOW I hope the results are good. You too Sheffield Jane! However even if you are in the osteoporosis ranges as I am..I would do lots and lots of research before taking AA. I refuse it and will continue to refuse it. I get another Dexa Scan in 2 months... had one before I started prednisone and was already in Osteoporosis. And hoping hoping the prednisone has not thinned bones further. I am using a weight belt (thanks Heron) not often enough. And I am taking Tap dancing. there are some heel drop exercises online (google it!) that one should do every day. along with Calcium and K2 7. and crossed fingers (which is the best thing to do for everything! (unless you are in Sweden and then you hold thumbs! )

Do as much walking & gardening as I am able yogabonnie & with the extra stone stone in weight don't think I need the belt! Can only hope that our bones hold up so we don't have to take the stuff. More tricky for yourself already being in the osteo. range. ATB
