I had to share this. Husband has just announced ruefully that there is no football on today.

I can go back in the cool north facing lounge and read a book, or watch TV.

Hallelujah!

Apologies to all those who actually like the game. 🙂

Can't stand the antics of grown men rolling over pretending to be hurt like children in a nursery!! Even my husband is saying it now!!!!..

Paid too much - they’re all prima donnas. The way they talk to the ref as well - you’d never see a rugby player get away with what they do.

My late hubby was a qualified football referee in the Army, but he gave it up in the end because even they kept whinging! He had to take his referee hat off and put his sergeant major one on at times!

It can only get worse, and as you say ovrepaid Prima Donnas............I struggle to under stand the economics of football with what's going on around us.........when you hear but he's the best and worth it........he's just kicking a ball!!😈

It’s crazy isn’t it? But unfortunately it’s big business, big money nowadays - not really sport any more. Certainly in the higher leagues.

in reply toDorsetLady

Agreed. Pathetic the play acting is DL. Less brutality for talented players. But at what cost? Always a different game evolving. Anyway! Rugby. Anyone understand the decisions!! Technology! With a heaving mass moving over the line etc! Over to you............................

Yes, no problem. Understand the majority, but if I don’t I have son, son-in-law, grandsons and granddaughter who all played/play the game!

in reply toDorsetLady

Lovely. DL. It's a passion. Don't we all love that. Rules! Well! All taken to the edge without a ref! The most difficult position to play.

Me neither....I've tried to and some of it I get but over all nooo...

I prefer football to rugby, don't understand rugby at all...BUT it is disgusting how the players talk to the ref - I always say why don't they show the same respect as in rugby - something has to be done and soon.

Hi,

The problem is their attitude filters down to all levels, so youth teams seem to think it’s okay to shout at the Ref. Only copying their heroes!

The managers aren’t a lot better either - it’s very rarely their players fault.

Telian in reply toDorsetLady

Exactly right it's the youths coming through the academies and those watching too!

Telian profile image
Telian in reply toLongtimer

It's all play acting, as soon as they've got their way they jump up like spring chickens, if I was refereeing they'd know - then there are some awful tackles...

The excellent footballers of the past wouldn`t recognise the game now....I feel embarrassed for some of them....don`t they know what they look like when playacting...it`s farcical....

Oh yes I can watch cricket, both that and rugby are family traditions!

I was introduced to cricket when I was about 17 or 18 - cricket mad boyfriend!

Give me soccer any day over the interminable overlapping seasons of ice hockey, American football, basketball, baseball....

in reply toHeronNS

American football! Love the highlights! What a complicated over analysed game though! Brave goalkeepers in ice hockey! Baseball never watched! Basketball is that Netball with giants!

Oh, G-d. The wretched game just drags on and on and on. The men push against each other, someone grabs the ball, runs a few yards, then everyone piles on top of him. They get up, dust themselves off, pat each other on the bum, then do it all over again. For..........Three..........Hours. I forgot to say they spend just as much time discussing strategy. I lack the gene to appreciate any aspect of this game, or the Canadian variant, whatsoever. Apart from tennis and golf, which are akin to the proverbial watching paint dry, I can tolerate most other games, but mostly I like some of the Olympic sports and competitions involving horses.

According to google netball is like basketball with a couple of variations in how the game is played.

Trivia question: Canada has a national summer sport and a national winter sport. Can you guess what they are?

You left out curling! The loudest most annoying of the sports to watch with everyone yelling "SWEEP. SWEEP"

Soraya_PMR profile image

Sweeeeeeep!

Yes, it was quite refreshing watching the wheelchair curling, none of that screaming.

in reply toHeronNS

Is it something with a stick! With a right angled bit on the end!! Never caught on with me! Always better with a pan shape, solid or with strings myself! Loved my footie too. Horse's. Well! Look at their intelligence & loyalty. Been to Cheltenham National Hunt a couple of times & seeing them in their beauty. Flying. Stunning.

The national game was lacrosse, until the 90s when the powers that be said lacrosse could be the national game in the summer, and of course hockey in the winter. 😆

I’ve had to take Mamici to task on this already Heron - it’s football not ‘soccer’....!

HeronNS in reply toRokerman

We actually use the terms interchangeably in our house. But you realize I live in North America so we have to say soccer to avoid confusion.

Rokerman profile image

Yes, I understand - North Americans are easily confused......🤣

I share his pain...... having watched every single game so far, I felt bereft yesterday! My wife is biding her time, waiting for the start of two weeks of non-stop tennis from Wimbledon; I say two weeks - with an early exit predicted for Andy Murray, the interest may wane much sooner! We did visit Centre Court a while ago - Maria Sharapova was deafening her opponent - I couldn’t wait to leave.....,
