AMERICAN DOCTOR ON ONE MEAL A DAY.

Hi Everyone,

Several months ago an American man I think he was a Doctor was talking about going on a eating regime of one meal a day, would love to know how he is going.

Last time I posted I was suffering from Plantar Fascitis which is horrible pains in the heel which results in hobbling around and seriously impeded on life. My PMR is under control, I have a fabulous Doctor and am now on 9mgs Pred for the last 4 days and going well. Now I have to address the dreaded weight gain which is not too bad but could get out of hand if I don't rein it in now. Hence have been looking at theOMAD people on you tube.

We are shifting to a house in the country in 4 weeks and have been culling and sorting and slowly packing up an incredible lot of stuff luckily my husbands Lions club members are coming to help in the last week. So trying not to think about the actual shift.

For me the absolute worst part of this condition is feeling tired all the time and I have started to have hot flushes again. So all in all its not too bad.

Oh poor you, hot flushes - not nice. I dont know what you did for your Plantar Fasciitis last time, but if you ever get it again, I found a boot helped me, I wore it at night and it soon sorted it out. Good luck with the move.

I am going to try the Victor Longo diet, have ordered the book, that recommends 2 meals a day. I am lucky, since having a TIA, and the start of PMA proper, I havent had an appetite at all, so after initial 14 lb loss I havent gained any weight. How I do sympathise with the tiredness.

Hi Bridget,

Apparently breakfast isn't as important as we have been told and a lot of people do 2 meals a day. Sometimes I think by eating breakfast it leads on to morning tea and eating biscuits and rubbish, or is that just me. My darling husband arrived home with 3 bottles of my favourite Bubbly just when I had decided to stop unnecessary drinking which leads to nibbles and mindless eating. Wonder how long it will be before I crack.

Boy! Does that all sound familiar. Especially the bubbly. I go that way at least once every 2 weeks. I've also recently gotten hooked on Whole wheat toast & grapefruit marmalade. Good luck with all that. That heel thing (and it is painful) I solved with a simple push against the wall, (elbows) & one foot in front of the other. Focus on the back heel & stretch. Then switch. Faithfully did 1st thing morning & before every run & tennis match. Never came back. Hope you like your new abode!

Hi my husband sorted his fasciitis by wearing Fit flops around the house.

Thanks for the reply. What on earth are Fit Flops?

Toast and marmalade sounds good. I did various exercises and bought gel orthotics for my shoes. It took a long time to go. That is the third time I've had it. Four years ago I had never heard of it. I had never heard of PMR either. Hope nothing else shows up.

It won't come back if you faithfully do those exercises daily!

I am glad you are doing well Cheshy in spite of the stress of moving. My very wealthy brother in law and his wife have just been relieved of £2000 to attend a Spa for a week. It boiled down to starting the day with lemon juice and hot water, followed by a small vegetable shot, then more vegetable smoothies at lunch time and veg soup at night. Only fruit teas and plenty of water to drink. All this was interspersed with various treatments and the odd lecture about the evils of sugar and processed food. They have lost about 7 lbs each. They didn’t feel hungry or bored. I thought , well that can’t be too hard and I could hang on to my money.

I'm reading your reply tucking in to chocolate, hopeless. Husband and I did Michael Mosley's intermittent fasting which was good. He lost about 20 kgs and has put back 7. It is never ending. My son has done a fruit and vegetables only for 1 week. He said it was emotionally challenging, whatever that means but he felt great and is going to keep it up in a modified version. He lost weight and it didn't cost anything. The Spa your brother in law and wife did was rather expensive. Hope they keep up the good work.

It'll all be back on in a couple of months!

I hadn’t the heart to tell them I could see no difference unless there was just a little bit more of them since the last time I saw them. 🙄

Go for it Jane and we could lecture you on here about the evils of this and that. Two grand saved - sorted.

I suppose the moral support of doing it in a group and the distraction of treatments is kind of what you pay for. I do think that “they” see the rich coming sometimes though.

Don’t you find that the heat kills the appetite for comfort foods in Australia, it did for me?

I also found it easy to find healthy options in Cafes. The fish and chips were superb 😂.

I think my main problem is eating too much carbs.

I lived in W Africa for years, and was routinely half a stone lighter than when back in UK. I think ambient temperature affects the metabolism. Also have family in Singapore, but have never stayed long enough to lose much weight there. One of these days . . .

They are so wickedly lovely though. I think they make me feel bloated and uncomfortable these days, that helps to put me off. All recent photographs are a horrible shock, even on days when I thought I looked nice. It can make me down all day. So I do feel your pain. ❤️

in reply toSheffieldJane

For some reason I have stopped having a negative reaction to photos. It was a lifelong habit...avoiding photos and latterly videos. There's a family joke that when me, my late mum and younger sister were at the food court of meadowhell the video camera showed us on the massive screen. Me and my mum were under the table in a second flat lol. My sister couldn't walk for ten mins laughing at us. I think her youngest daughter "helped" as ever since she got a mobile she has sneakily taken photos and videos. They make me laugh. When she took one of me and my sister with an app that swapped facial parts I decided that normally I didn't look that bad!!

I saw the one meal a day idea described as the 'Warrior Diet' which immediately made it a no-no for me as I've never felt less like a warrior. One immediate side effect of pred for me was round the clock ravenous hunger , so it would have been impossible even to consider one meal a day. Since starting on methotrexate the hunger has reduced quite considerably - don't know if this is cause and effect or a co-incidence, but I'm very glad. I thought I would end up bankrupting myself, my food expenditure went up so high. Deliveroo deliver Nando's round here and so often I just couldn't resist. I still don't think I could get down to one meal a day very comfortably though.

I had the same experience hungry all the time on pred but when I took metho ( after the first couple of weeks) I lost my appetite

Maybe there is a connection then. Body chemistry is so complex...

On the other hand - I had the carb munchies every afternoon for most of the 5 years I had PMR without pred. It didn't help on the weight gain front due to being unable to exercise! The first day I took pred - no afternoon carb munchies! My older daughter goes off food with pred too.

Gosh, I wish I'd reacted like that instead of the opposite... I might not have a couple of stone to lose now.

If you want to lose weight while on pred - cut your carbs, it is far less harrowing than changing your normal eating pattern to OMAD.

The success part of losing weight is finding a way that suits YOU, that reeducates your palate to accept less food in some way or another. It may be calories, it may be carbs, it may be fat. With pred your body responds differently to carbs and that is what causes much of the weight gain and increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. So taking carbs out of the equation makes sense - it allows you the same number of meals you are used to if you need them. Removing 2 meals from the day for a woman is likely to cause problems if you still have to feed other members of the household!!!!

We are all different. For me breakfast IS the most important meal. Without it I would have a raging headache by 10 a.m. and be snacking continuously for the rest of the day. I often forget to eat lunch, or have it very late, which is a bad idea, because really the meal we should skip or make very small is the last meal of the day. "Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper."

But then I wake in the middle of the night!

Hence the small bedtime snack. :)
