Hi jevuki, good luck with the hip replacement. Try and get as fit as possible beforehand if you can. There are some exercises you can do lying in bed even. Do you know if you are having a posterior or anterior approach?

Hi Piglette, he says Posterior because of so much damage, but he will not cut tendons or muscle........yes I just got the exercises I will start doing them now

Hi jevuki,

That sounds good. A lot of people want the anterior approach nowadays because of a smaller scar and the initial limitations on movement are less it seems. I think the problem with anterior is that the surgeon has much less room to manipulate and can cause nerve problems, so I would go for posterior any day, as I am not going to be wearing that brief a bikini!

Ha Ha Ha those days are long gone for me also.

I had hip replacement and wish I had had posterior. Took a while longer with anterior.. was not suppose To BUT that being said. After the first day... you will see that EVERY DAY you feel better and better and better and it is WELL worth it!! Good luck! Take it easy and take the pain pills BEFORE the pain comes back. And you have patience from PMR so know how to come off easily. I was so stupid I thought I don't want these pills and of course didn't taper and had jumpy insides ..so had to go to taper with the pain pills.! Hip replacement makes a HUGE difference you won't regret it!

thanks for the encouragement Yogabonnie I am scared to death, but have no choice I really do not like any type of pain medication so this will be a big test

Hi jevuki, you will be fine. You are only in hospital for a couple of days or so nowadays and you will be eating and walking very soon after the op. It is the unknown that is always worrying. Are you having a general anaesthetic or a spinal block?

jevuki profile image
jevuki in reply topiglette

Hi piglette he tells me a spinal block and that it reduces the pain factor. He says I will take a nap have the block an wake up feeling nothing in my legs until it wears off.

Hi jevuki, with a spinal block you can decide if you want sedation or not. I think you can even decide how much. I decided I did not want it at all as I wanted to know what was going on!! The surgeon was able to ask me what sort of stitches I wanted. Not that I had a clue. The big advantage of a spinal is that you don’t have the hangover effect of a general. I had a spinal block recently for another operation with no sedation and I was able to join in the conversation which happened to be on the Catalan problem, one of the nurses was Spanish.

Wow I will talk to him about that I do not like anesthesia at all bad experience. This sounds like a great option.

Unfortunately I was not able to see my hip being done as they had stuck a green sheet up. I could hear them talking though. I believe in some places you can see it on a screen. It was quite an experience and very strange as you could not feel anything but knew they were cutting you up.

Lol it sounds so gruesome I guess it is really

piglette in reply tojevuki

I suppose it is quite invasive when you think of it. What amazed me that after the op I thought I would feel as if there was this alien thing in me, but in fact it felt like it was my normal hip, the same as before I had the op done. I still lie in bed and cannot believe that there is something artificial inside me.

Jevuki, me too, until I broke my leg and had to wear a splint for several weeks, followed by painful hip problems and development of PMR, when perforce I learned to sleep on my back (and apparently to snore) 😳 . Two or three years along I can sleep on side again.

Had my second hip done under spinal block and was out of bed the same day and home two days later , just be as fit as possible before you go in th have it done and above all think positive x

Thanks Rosbud, I am still working and using a walker as legs so to speak. I refuse to sit down and not move around at all. I cannot wait to be able to walk again.

All the best for your hip op. 10 years since mine. fantastic no pain. strange at first just bear with it & get on your feet asap. lots of different meds now as well. believe me it's worth having done.
