Bad pain Methotrexate and Ibruprophen

Took my first dose of methotrexate yesterday and lowered my dose of prednisone to 10mg from 11mg. This morning I’m in bad pain. Does anyone take ibuprofen for pain along with MXT?

Thanks

Hi Judy,

You shouldn’t really be taking Ibruprofen with Pred - it belongs to the NSAID family, and therefore a no-no.

You can take paracetamol alongside Pred, it could be withdrawal pains even though you’ve only gone from 11mg to 10mg. If it is withdrawn symptoms they should go in a day or two.

Hope you soon feel better.

You shouldn't take brufen together with pred more than occasionally.

Did your rheumy tell you to reduce your pred immediately you started on the mtx? It takes some weeks to start to have an effect (if it is going to at all) and most rheumies would say to wait a month or two before trying to reduce. I'm assuming you are on mtx because you have got stuck at 11mg? I'd go back to 11 and wait a bit before trying again.

My rheumatologist has now diagnosed me with Seronegative Rheumatoid arthritis. I think I will take 11mg today. I’m in horrible pain.

In that case - if 11mg was holding your symptoms reasonably well I'd definitely wait a couple of months before trying to get off it. mtx can take up to 6 months to work in RA - did he not explain that?

Yes she explained that. She let me take Advil also while on prednisone. I’m afraid to take it with methotrexate. I’ll have to wait to call the office tomorrow.

This blog

rawarrior.com/

is very good with very reliable and well researched information. You will find lots of drug information there.

And this is on the same topic you have asked from NRAS on HU:

Looks like you are OK with Advil. And it isn't as if you are going to be taking it for months before asking is it?

Hi Judy

I am currently on 7mg Prednisone, started with 40mg 1,5 years ago. Was told to take Ibuprofen at the last consultation. After 2 days my blood pressure was at 200 ! Stopped Ibuprofen immediately. Now all normal again. Better to bear with the pain which has returned since 7mg pred.

You shouldn't bear with the pain - go back to the last dose where you had minimal pain. There is no virtue intaking too little - all that will happen is that the inflammation will build up like a dripping tap fills a bucket - and eventually will overflow into a good going lare.
