Oral thrush

I get recurrent oral thrush in my mouth and throat. Have Daktarin prescribed but wondered if anyone has any other suggestions.

By the way thank you for the tip of taking the Pred with natural yoghurt.

Hi Suetum,

There's always something isn't there? I did suffer in the early days when on high doses, but after a couple of treatments it disappeared, thankfully, so maybe yours will as well.

Do you use a mouthwash? If you do, maybe it's aggravating the situation? Or, conversely maybe one would help. Suggest you speak to your local pharmacist, or maybe your dentist for advice on the best to use.

Could try avoiding acidic drinks and food and see if that helps, as they sometimes aggravate it.

Would have thought that the natural yoghurt might have helped as well, but think it needs to be 'live'.

I know others have asked this question before, so hopefully you should get some suggestions.

Last year I attended a large international symposium on Sjögren's Syndrome. Thrush is a very common problem in that disease. I had a conversation with a canadian professor in dentistry, and she had done a research on coconut oil and oral thrush The conclusion was that it worked just as well as any medical anti fungal drug.

You take 1 small tablespoon virgin coconut oil (e.g cocosa)in your mouth and move it around for about three minutes before you spit it out (important. Don't swallow it.)

If it is recurrent it usually means the treatment you were given didn't last long enough or that the infection is systemic - which means topical oral treatments won't eliminate it completely and a course of tablets might do the trick. This is particularly case where the patient is immuno-suppressed, which technically we are being on pred, and where that contributes to developing the thrush in the first place.

Are you using natural yoghurt with added bacteria? That may help.

The English is a bit wobbly in places but the paper itself is a good summary - section 3 is the one looking at the various aspects that will probably interest you.

And a VERY simple thing you can try: dispose of your toothbrush after every episode and clean it thoroughly during one. I'm assuming you don't have dentures? But both of these items can carry all sorts of things...

Still might need to change the head of the toothbrush!

Taking the Pred with yoghurt in the morning has meant I no longer have to take Omeprazole for indigestion. Works a treat

Clean your toothbrush heads by boiling and make a very weak (1/4 tsp to a cup of water) bleach/water solution to keep it in between brushing. I was put on diflucan for 21 days to clear a recurrent thrush situation. Since then I keep my toothbrush sterile, my denture gets bleached weekly on top of daily cleaning and I drink a cider vinegar drink twice a week to cleanse my mouth and throat. Seems to be working.

Good idea and less expensive that changing the toothbrush head daily.

I didn't say daily - at the end of the infection/course of medication. And up until then cleaning it!

Daktarin, oral gel, yes , night cleaning of teeth and tongue most important, apply gel as far as you can to back of tongue and leave for at least two minutes before swallowing, take nothing else before going to bed , try not to eat for at least half an hour during the day after applications ,
