Has anyone had an infusion of this kind? My Rheumatologist (who is brilliant) says it only needs to be done once a year. Decades scan showed osteoporosis in both hips so it sounds like a good idea but there are lots of side effects!

Zoledronic acid infusions
My Rheumy has recommended the same thing once a year as I have osteoporosis in e left hip. I am waiting to hear when I have to go for the first infusion. I can't take the oral dose of Alendronic Acid because I have a pre-existing reflux problem which would be exacerbated. The information I have found on line says that the side effects are similar to a mild dose of flu and short-lasting. And at least it's just once a year. Good luck to both of us!
Hi Pat,
I stopped taking the Alendronic Acid because I felt uncomfortable about side effects . My Rheumatologist was concerned and suggested an infusion of Zolendronic Acid. No-one had ever mentioned previously - I wonder if that is about cost?
I had my Vit D checked beforehand and it was extremely low. This meant I had to have 7 weeks of intensive Vit D tablets before having an infusion.
I couldn't find out much about infusions (GPs nurses could tell me nothing!) in advance but a couple of friends knew people who'd had infusions (not ZA) ... they said it would take about an hour.
I went to the hospital armed with books and magazines to read but after a couple of minutes I felt really drowsy and almost nodded off! The infusion only took about 15 minutes but I was very tired at the end. The nurse got me a cup of tea so I could just sit until I felt well enough to leave. Might be good idea to arrange a lift home.
Within 24 hours of Zolendronic Acid I felt so much better and as far as I can tell no side effects. Even though we have lots of sunshine at present I also continue to take a Vit D tablet each day. My experience has been totally positive.
Good luck.

Hi Pat 9442
I had Zolendronate infusions for three years as I found it vey difficult to swallow the Alendronic acid pills. I would recommend it if it has been offered to you.
my friend has just had the infusion, she had mild flu like symptoms for 3 days, she is fine now x
I had it and had no side effects that I am aware of. It sure beats taking the pills. I think it was expensive.
