Biggest challenge yet and raising awareness of PMRGCA

Just over a year ago I could hardly walk and was restricted to a wheelchair. The joint pains were unbearable as I could not lift my arms at all, lost nearly 2½st in a month; I had to drink through a straw and had difficulty performing even the simplest of hygienic tasks! Literally overnight I went from running over 50 miles per week to becoming a bed patient! I was eventually diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) which was extremely unusual for a very fit and active 51 year old Fire Officer! Last year I was due to run my 5th London Marathon, climb in the French Alps, return to the Himalayas for a 4 week climbing expedition to Ama Dablam … and run my umpteenth Great North Run.

I’m now learning to live with PMR on a long-term steroid reduction programme. I’ve completed 38 Parkruns (raising awareness of PMRGCA by wearing our tee shirt), organised a UK 3 Peaks team, walked up Snowdon and gradually returned to climbing … ready for more adventures in the future. I’ve decided to attempt the Great North Run again on 7th September which will definitely be my biggest and hardest challenge to date as I don’t know (as yet) how my body will cope with running 13 miles … something I used to do 1hr 20mins! Please support me at: justgiving.com/John-Robson8/

Thank -you
