Has anyone been referred to an Immunologist.

My Proteins are low, when I was first told this, about a year ago, I couldn't understand it as I thought I had a good intake of protein in my diet but I did up it, it is still only 4 though and I have been referred to an Immunologist at Addenbrooks by my Rheumatologist. I feel stupid, that I didn't ask more questions. Can anyone tell me what is likely to happen and what questions they are likely to ask me, I do usually make a list to take with me for an appointment so would welcome any help or advise.

No sorry, I thought I'd been round every hospital department, but that's one I missed. I'm pretty sure that the proteins the Rheumy has referred to are not the same as the protein you eat though. I think it refers to proteins in the blood.

Sorry I can't be more help - perhaps others can help you more.

Low blood protein can be caused by not enough in the diet but as you do eat plenty of protein foods this is not the case with you. Sometimes autoimmune diseases themselves can cause low blood protein. Other than this I don't know what could be causing it. AS well as dealing with autoimmunity an immunologist works with allergies and infections. Hopefully the immunologist will be able to determine where the problem lies.

Hi Dorene,

What blood proteins are you referring to? Is it Albumin and total protein ( which relate to your nutritional state, 4 is exceptionally low for either of them ) or is it a special protein pertaining to your immune system such as C3 and C4 complement?

If it is an immune system protein which is low ( I believe there are over 20 of them ) then it is all quite complex. You would need to find out what specific protein is only 4.

Hopefully everything will become clear when you have your appt and you will have an opportunity to ask questions. Good luck and let us know how you get on, you have tweaked my curiosity!

Best wishes

Thank you for your replies, all I know is the Rheumatologist said Protein's with an s on the end. My appointment is on the 30th June, I will let you know how I get on. Dorene.

Could it have been immunoglobulins Dorene. There are 5 types which are involved in immune response eg IgE is involved in allergic reactions.

It is possible Keyes, I don't understand much about it, my ESR readings are down but I thought my blood count was alright, another question to ask at my appointment. Thank you for your concern. Dorene.
