Anyone find after transplant that their liver has iron deposits from transfusions that were done at transplant? It is called liver hemosiderosis (iron overload) and was just identified with MRI elastography now 4 years from transplant. The fibrosis score is 3.2 and is considered stage1-2 fibrosis. No cirrhosis seen. My hepatology doctors says not to worry, but I’m not liking finding anything out of range after these years of protecting the liver. Anyone else have this finding? If so, how has it turned out? We will watch and wait a year and do a repeat scan. I had massive amounts of transfusions when the liver failed over a 7-day period until transplant.

They found iron deposits in my initial scans immediately post but within the year it had cleared. I did not have massive transfusion even during surgery, I was under the norm. Any chance you had it before and it wasn't noticed because of the cirrhosis? Maybe cutting down on iron rich foods or if you take a multivitamin then one without iron. I don't take extra iron because I've always run very high. Perhaps a viral cause?
Unfortunately with my liver failing I had severe coagulopathy and the only way to survive was to add many blood units until the new liver stabilized me after transplant. Sometimes 20 units in a day. And the body does not have a mechanism to unbind the iron. But I’m glad your situation has resolved. Thanks for responding.
