Does anyone know if malaria prevention tablets have an effect on PBC - planning a trip to India
Loved India! Travelled a lot before diagnosis and often wondered if the jabs for Hep a, b, yellow fever etc triggered this, but no one knows. I wanted to go to China last year but Doc but I was suffering app jaundice before diagnosis and a lot of inflammation and doctor said would be better to wait until this had reduced and my new medication was in the correct balance before adding etc or putting myself in position of infection. That was only because of the newness of it all, he made it clear it wouldn't be forever. I would marine your doctor would be happier that you were taking mediation to prevent other problems rather than risking another disease. Look at the way they recommend the flu injectionetc. Best thing will be to check with your doctor. Let us know how you get on and happy travelling. x

I have found the NHS page online as I presume you may be in the UK. Apparently there are different types of antimalaria tablets and noticed one is not recommended for liver diseases. Sounds like the best bet would be to see your GP.

Hi Nannnan, you really need to make an appointment with your practice nurse at your GP surgery for a travel consultation. They will tell you exactly which vaccinations and anti malarials you will need, they will guide you. This advice applies to anyone who is travelling abroad and not just those with a chronic disease.
Thank you Junolee, Peridot and Donkey, I have been to India (Goa) before 2 or 3 times but that was before I got PBC, Malaria medication is reccomended for that area and the way it works is: You take the medication daily 2 weeks before you go, daily whilst you are there and a further 2 weeks daily after return. This being said I would not risk going without it but I'm very concerned about the possible effecys of actually taking the meds and what effect it could have on my liver I think perhaps I might choose somewhere else to go but wondered if anyone had experienced it already. Thanks again for your replys. By the way I actually saw my practice nurse 2 weeks ago and she asked me if "I'D STOPPED DRINKING YET I replied no I haven't because you can't stop something you never started !!!!!!! Not impressed .Ann
Ditto re the drinking! One of the nurses at the GP surgery I go and who has now taken my blood 4 times in the last 2yrs has asked me not once but 3 times how much I drink too!!!
I think I might be tempted next time I go to tell her to have a look online, preferably on the PBC Foundation of LiverNorth website (as they are better than the NHS one. I told the GP so myself when he printed info out for me when he gave me the first script for urso that his info wasn't very good and I'd already read it). That way the nurse might understand that bit more!!???
Oh I'm not finished with her yet I don't mind when people say that they don't know a lot about PBC, she did not have a clue but was too "something" to say so, her attitude on that day was not good but I like to serve my revenge cold ha ha lol
