fibrosis

This refers to the development of scar tissue.

Our body naturally wants to return our tissue and repair it to its normal structure.

Most forms of acute liver injury, the liver will return it to its normal structure and size.

If the injury is chronic, the rate of the injury can exceed the liver's capacity to repair. Then we have a build up of scar tissue.

Once the scar tissue becomes extensive, then cirrhosis develops.
