encephalopathy

This is a term used for a condition of toxic brain dysfunction. In those with PBC, it is known as hepatic encephalopathy.

This occurs in advanced cirrhosis as the liver fails to filter the toxins. It occurs rarely, a liver transplant being the only help.

HE (Hepatic Encephalopathy) is not the cognitive symptoms seen in many PBC patients such as forgetfulness, brain fog, or fuzzy thinking often experienced with the fatigue.
