Hi janine541

I am sure someone with some experience of low white blood cells will wade in later but whenever I see anyone talk about the dreaded itch I want to reach out.

Professor Jones has talked about some alternatives for the treatment of the itch and I wonder if a telephone call to the PBC Foundation's helpline or an email to them would help you find an answer.

For myself I have tried something Professor Jones has talked about, L-Methionine (SMAe) with some success. I have taken the following from Healthy Place website:

"S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe) is a naturally occurring compound that is involved in many biochemical processes in the body. SAMe plays a role in the immune system, maintains cell membranes, and helps produce and break down brain chemicals such as serotonin, melatonin, and dopamine as well as vitamin B12. SAMe also participates in the making of genetic material, known as DNA, and cartilage. Low amounts of folate (vitamin B9) in the body may lead to reduced levels of SAMe.

Numerous scientific studies indicate that SAMe may be useful in the treatment of depression, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, and liver disorders. Although it has been available in Europe by prescription for a number of years, SAMe was only recently introduced as a dietary supplement in the United States."

It may be something you could discuss with your hepatologist/gastrenterologist as well as with the PBC Foundation.

unfortunately I have had low white blood cell counts on many occasions. I am on Imuran for AIH. I also have PBC. My hepatologist tells me it’s usually because I have an infection. With Imuran my count hasn’t always been on the low end but when I get infections of drops below normal levels. I hope this helps

Hi could I ask you what is low for you. I'm having a ultra scan and a fibro scan too

unfortunately I am probably not the best person to ask. I would just post a general question to the group or do a search. I did mine years ago and it was not great. I think like13 or 14.
