Is HRT a No No if have PBC

Hello to all you menopausal women with PBC,

I Was diagnosed back in 2016. I've been suffering symptoms of the menopause for some time now. Have often thought that I should explore HRT with my GP but not yet made 'that' appointment. Just wondering if it is something we can go on or if it is a definite NO!?

Would love to have your thoughts!

🙂

Hormone replacement therapy? I use estrogen cream, it’s helpful. Always looking for a better lubricant to go with it though.

I take compounded HRT because my doc feels it will help with bone loss common in PBC due to lack of Vitamin ADEK absorption.

I’ve recently gone onto the evorel continent patch (I’m post menopause) and found they have helped eradicate my hot flushes, but haven’t helped lift my mood, so my GP has prescribed oestrogen gel to supplement the patch. But she has said they will need to closely monitor liver levels to see if there’s any negative affect. So I would suggest getting that appointment but insist you’re monitored regularly especially in the first few months.

My gp said no to HRT tablets but yes to the transdermal parch,

Good luck

as others have said avoid the oral tablet options but transdermal via patches, gels, sprays etc aren’t metabolised in the liver so should be fine.

I was taken off HRT (pills at first and then the patch) when PBC was diagnosed.

This study shows estrogens play a beneficial role. There are studies that show clinical significance do declining estrogen and onset of autoimmune markers for PBC. Many Hepatologists are pro-HRT, but do indeed prefer the transdermal route (not oral), as any medication taken orally passes through the liver.

Hi

I’m on patches. My consultant said that was fine and will help with bone density. Good luck

I am on Bioidentical HRT which comes in cream form that you rub into your wrist area each am and pm. I’ve had PBC for over 10 years. I can’t tolerate Urso or Obetacolic Acid (Ocaliva). I am also allergic to Casein (so all milk products are out) and Gluten.

So 6 mths ago I was put on to Bezafibrate (Bezalip). A couple of days ago I went for blood test results and the consultant says I am nearly into normal range and the best I’ve been for 10 years! So my B-HRT is NOT harming me because it bypasses being processed by my liver and the Bezafibrate (which apparently was originally developed to lower cholesterol I think in France) is doing a great job of lowering my stats. Keep hope everyone!

I’m exact the same. Diagnosed in 2016. I had a meeting with a dr who said she could only give me an oestrogen patch( I wanted oral progesterone and oestrogen patch - body identical , she said she need the ok from my consultant, he said yes. Just going through the motions now. Ask your consultant
