Colestyramine

Morning

Went to see consultant last week.

I mentioned that I have been itching lately not unbearable but still aggravating!

He prescribed me Colestryramine. He didn’t really want to prescribe Rifampician/ Naltrexone saying that it was quite a strong medication.

Any went to chemist apparently they have stopped supplying it .

Have been told by Gp there is no alternative.

Has anyone had the same problem?

TIA

I use Visteral, (sp) and Triamcinolone Acetonide for itching. Hep prefers the pills to the Cream (Triam.) as it is a steroid.

Since 2016 I have been prescribed colestyramine which has now become difficult to get. As of 7 weeks ago I am taking Colestagel which the GP prescribed when I showed her evidence from the following link:

sps.nhs.uk which is the specialist pharmacy service. If you go to the link and search for colestyramine it comes up with relevant information for you.

I understand that there are pockets in the UK where colestyramine can still be obtained but it is patchy.

Since changing to Colestagel I have found my tummy issues have improved.

To control my itching there was a sequence of events, first colestryramine when that did not work naltrexone was added but I did not do well on it so Rifampicin was the alternative, still itching the hepatologist added 25mg of Sertraline which is an antidepressant but it also helped with the itching. I recently started to use a magnesium spray and that together with the change to colestagel seems to have rid me (at least for now) of the so called itch of PBC.

hope the above is helpful to you.
