Generic ursodeoxycholic acid

Hi, when I went to pick up my prescription this week, I checked it to make sure it was correct and saw that it wasn't the normal Ursoflak. I asked the pharmacist why there was a generic one instead of Ursofalk and she told me the doctors have told them to give out generic medicine unless otherwise stated by them because of Brexit. The medicine was made in Latvia. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Hi, This happened to me some years ago. After a week or so I developed itching and other symptoms. Brexit is being used for any excuse currently. Of course a generic deoxycholic acid is cheaper. I spoke to the pharmaceutical company in the end and was told there are different ingredients in the different capsules. He urged me too insist with Pharmacy to go back to Urso. Can I suggest you go to the Pharmacistand get him/her onside pleasantly, and ask. If not, go to your GP. They do not really understand the delicacy of PBC.

Good Luck. AnnaC

When I was first diagnosed with PBC, I received Ursofalk for the first couple of years, then this was replaced with various generic alternatives. And since using these cheaper brands ( 3 years ) my hair has become thinner & thinner, each morning after brushing my hair there has been a significant amount of hair on the hair brush. I always wondered if the change of Urso was relevant to my hair loss ? Now I am absolutely certain this is the case, as in the last four weeks I have suffered with pneumonia in my right lung, & whilst on a very high dosage of antibiotics I stopped taking my generic Urso, about 2 weeks. I thought this was a good time to make a comparison, so luckily I had a old box of Ursofalk ( still in date ) which I found at the back of my medicine cupboard. With out a shadow of a doubt my hair loss has subsided, I would say just normal 😊.

So I intend to request my Doc stipulates Ursofalk on the prescription.

I believe the fillers used to make Urso make the difference.

Think you will find (in the UK) that the GP doesn’t control what the chemist dispenses. If the GP prescribed Ursofalk then that should be dispensed if he/she prescribed Ursodeoxicolic Acid then the pharmacy can dispense whatever he stocks as the generic is about half the price of Ursofalk. Boots supply Ursofalk even when the the script is for Ursodeoxicolic

It has nothing to do with Brexit the chemist is fobbing you off. there is a lot of information on this subject on here as it’s been raised several times. Good luck

I've had generic ursodeoxycholic acid before in France with no problems. I have lived in 3 different countries and been on 4 different types with no problems. My question was if anyone else has been put onto a generic type recently.
