Low thyroid : Has anyone eles have this since... - PBC Foundation
Low thyroid
My-life...I’ve had thyroid issues for many years, since late teens. (I’m 64). It has been a little harder since diagnosis to keep levels in check. But, having said that, I take only Ocaliva & it is stated in drug facts it can have negative impact on thyroid levels. 😊
i had total thyroidectomy in 2010. Got on levothyroxine and was stable for 6 years ( stable meaning same dosage amount and consistently similar TSH blood labs) Then dx'd with PBC and started URSO.
Since then it's been constant changing Med level and going from hypo to hyper. Ugh. right now my labs show thyroid in "normal" range BUT the lab level range for " normal" is so wide that I'm still not feeling great- I mean I have read that "how" the patient feels is equally important to TSH labs... anyway no easy answer.
I had a multi nodular thyroid goiter for many years but TSH was normal. However during a routine check up last March, my TSH was abnormally low which equates hyper thyroid.
Endocrinologist put me on methaziole (anti thyroid meds) after a nuclear thyroid scan. She indicated that most patients get back to normal 1-2 years on the meds. Well, my thyroid responded quickly & within 2 months it went to hypo on the meds. So we stop the meds & in Dec I was still slightly hypo. Doctor said my optimal level should be in the midpoint of the normal range since that was how it was before it went crazy on me. Have to get another blood test soon to see where it is at.

Thyroid issues are an autoimmune disorder just like PBC.
Autoimmune disorders tend to cluster in those prone to them. We are prone to them due to lower than normal levels of a certain enzyme or hormone in our bodies. There is resent research on this but no cure yet for the condition. The hope is to cure this underlying condition to prevent PBC and other autoimmune disorders. Unfortunately I can't find where I read about this to link it.
But it's a good idea to look for any signs of other autoimmune disorders in regular check ups. Working with your doctor to stay on top of your health is paramount.
Good luck!
