I have not been eating a lot lately. How much protein should you have in a day ?
Protein: I have not been eating a lot lately... - PBC Foundation
Protein
Hello Ohio82.
I am in the UK and the British Liver Trust have a leaflet you can download all about diet in liver disorders. I've popped the link on here. Scroll to the bottom and you can see the leaflet there.
As far as I know we are said to jsut continue with our normal diet with PBC unless of course we are at a later stage and it might then be advised to change our diet slightly. I don't actually know the UK recommended intake of protein daily, never really taken much notice myself. I am more wary of fat intake.
Recently saw a good tv programme on various qualities of food and high protein foods that are now about more (ie high protein breakfast cereals) and it was said that we tend to get all the protein we need in our daily diet so shoudln't really need to have a high protein diet unless it ws advised by a medic. Body builders tend to have a high protein diet to build muscle but that's for that purpose.
Have you tried eating little and often to see if you can eat a more adequate intake daily. I tend to go quality over quantity myself but I don't calorie count, etc as with the PBC itching at night I tend to fidget about that much and am up and down a few times due to broken sleep I think I use enough energy then. I just eat how I feel at the time. Some days I find I can manage the whole evening meal we have but other times I only serve a small portion as I don't feel that hungry. For me the best time to eat is breakfast and lunch.

I don't eat much at a time but don't eat often either. I am dry mouthed but not sorgrens (sorry I did not spell that correctly), so it's hard to eat & swallow. Also having dental issues - loosing teeth etc. so it's hard to chew.
I watch my fats as they don't agree with me , so it's easy to not over do on fatty foods. I do eat fruits & vegetables, but have to be careful because I'm on blood thinners so something's I can't eat.
Thanks !! Have a good day !
Hi ohio82,
I'm on blood thinners too, I wasn't aware of having to avoid certain foods. What are they?
Just wondering where in Ohio are you. I live in Richfield, Ohio between Akron and Cleveland. I have PBC
Having a balanced diet is important and between 10% to 35% of the calories you eat a day should come from protein for the average female according to ( webmd.com ). Obviously if you have dietary issues to do with your liver your doctors would be giving you dietary guidelines to ensure your getting all your nutrients.
Having a dry mouth is awful I have sjogrens and teeth issues, I have quite soft foods like fish pie, Shepard pie, risottos, lasagne and spaghetti Bol are good choices if you have a dry mouth I find them easier to digest as well however, the down side is you need to make your own to control the fat and salt that's added so I do batches and freeze them. ( I don't enjoy cooking) I do lots of braised dishes and soups easy I add beans to these which help bulk up the soup as a meal.
I have a hard time getting in all the protein we need too, and most times my appetite is "blah" but I force myself to eat because I know the liver needs it to repair itself....I eat mostly raw fruits and veggies, sometimes steamed veggies... as long as I stay away from beef my digestive system is happy....I LOVE STEAK!!😢 I can snag a few bites from boyfriends and I'm ok tho.
Protein is important because it has the enzymes to repair your liver. It's not ALL your liver needs but it's very important...make sure tho you see a nutritionist or talk to your doctor first tho...
"The DRI (Dietary Reference Intake) is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, or 0.36 grams per pound. This amounts to: 56 grams per day for the average sedentary man. 46 grams per day for the average sedentary woman."
Ohio82...I presume your in US? Check with your insurance company but most do offer one visit with a nutritionist. Since it's for your disease it's preventative as long as your GP or Heptologist refers you.
CK WITH YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY FIRST!!!! It may not be but I can assure you one thing, after this year it WONT be! The House of Rep bill DID NOT have preventative coverage regulations in the bill they passed...and who the bloody hell knows what the Seanate is doing behind closed doors...guarenteed it's NOT GOOD and you and I are screwed with our "Pre-Existing" Condition...regardless of where you get your insurance from...the Exchange, Medicare, Private or Corporate...and if your on Medicaid God Help You...God Help us All...
Preventative procedures, most meds, and dr visits (like annual physical) are free with your insurance plan under Obamacare aka Affirdable Care Act..
As always, CHECK WITH YOUR INSURANCE!!! Different states adopted different policies, and different insurance policies offer different plans....catastrophic insurance does NOT have such regulations (rules) to follow per sey...
Can't remember where I read this but here's what I remember: the protein a woman should take in a day is 0.8 gram per kg of your weight.
Too much protein can elevate your kidney labs..... drink plenty of water also.... google for your age about protein.... prob around50 gms daily ..... 40 for me
