Last year, Rothwell and Towler covered me for about £50+ for 3 weeks in Crete, and that did include 3 other 'conditions' (only one of which is a potential issue, really, but you have to tell them everything ... and they then count things I didn't even know I had to mention - eg a 1cm fibroid!). However, my PBC is not yet active (I just test +ve for AMAs, always perfect lfts and never any serious issues) they ask all the questions, eg. any 'varices banded' etc, but as my kind consultant decided to label me 'pre-symptomatic for PBC' (which I gather is not a recognised diagnosis) the travel company has to be told, and they act on - the 'PBC' part. So, if your PBC is more significant, then it may cost more. Oh and that didn't cover me for any landing or diversion on a flight - which could cost £10s 0f 1000s. I didn't see that in the small print until late.

There is a company called JD Consultants, I think you tell them everything and they find you the best deal for your conditions - a friend recommended them when her husband's heart was dodgy before a cruise, but I have not tried them. The PBC Foundation site should have a list of TI Companies people have praised in the past, but they change constantly, and sometimes it depends on which person you speak to. Good luck, and please do post on here if you find someone good.

They asked if I'm

Jaundice and my eyes are slightly but I said no as my consultant says its not jaundice like they think where my liver is going to go into failure and they asked about my veins in esphogus which they think I may have but if I have they aren't big or troublesome as yet! It's so hard - I was expecting to pay £50 / £60 as that's what I paid last year but £183!!!!! What a joke - ok ill keep you posted if I can find better

Did you actually mention PBC to them? I did last year and they said I would not be insured for anything related to the condition. That could be a minefield!

Hi jo5ma,

'World First' is the (other?) name of the company I used, though I referred to them, above, as 'Rothwell and Towler'. I had amazingly long, detailed, courteous and informed discussions with one of their telephone people (Melanie??) and they covered me for PBC - I've got it in writing!! I told all the details about only testing +ve for AMAs, and never having abnormal lfts or any symptoms, and how for over 12 years I'd only had annual blood tests with no (mis-)diagnosis to even declare. She did go and talk to her 'Medical Advisor' and the response was that because the more recent Consultant had named PBC in his diagnosis (he labelled me 'pre-symptomatic for PBC' ) they had to treat me as having PBC. But once we'd got that sorted, they ran through a battery of questions about PBC, and I was able to say 'no' to everything, jaundice, abnormal lfts etc and they covered me. Maybe they didn't yet cover PBC when you contacted them, or maybe they have a high cut off point, as I'm sure I've seen someone else post on here who was turned down by them for something I don't have, eg abnormal lfts? But I was very impressed, as they even understood my eye condition, which no one else had - I think they had a much more sophisticated database than the other companies I'd tried up until then.

Hi jo5ma, Sorry if I got that wrong, I'd assumed you were answering Perkywerky about 'World first' but just realised you might have been answering SusanB about M&S.

Hi, Susan B, Very interesting, thanks. So how rigorous is their screening, and is that for Europe only, or Worldwide? I want to go to the States sometime soon-ish for my work/research, and that seems to be very dodgy. Also, how much do you have to shop there? Can't say I'm an M&S girl, more Totnes ageing hippy.

Why don't replies come out under the person I'm trying to reply to??

Hello Perkywerky76.

No experience of travel insurance as never been out of the UK as yet. Was going to 2yrs ago but after checking out quotes, etc I decided not to bother. Far too expensive and I thought some of the companies far too nosy.

I did however look on the back page of Liver North current newletter (you can find it on their Publications section online - I'll post the website here), they have what they believe to be the most updated insurance companies so might be worth checking out as some companies do change their rulings.

I saw an advertisement on tv last night and it was advertising Saga, don't know if they can help?

Hi, try World First Travel Insurance and confirm your medical condition as Primary Biliary Cholangitis - I've just secured annual cover at a reasonable price.
