I have a rough liver?

My consultant said I have a rough liver, after my biopsy test. When I asked what this meant she said it is not smooth. This was obvious to me but does anyone know what it means apart from being not smooth!!!

All I can think of as I've never had a biopsy is that your liver at the time was showing signs of inflammation and after time it can start to look a bit different from a normal liver.

I've never had a biopsy myself. I would perhaps think about making an appt to see my family doctor if it was myself and asking him/her to explain further.

A rough liver means you have scar tissue on the liver. A liver is normally a smooth and flexibile organ. I would ask them to explain what stage that is, but I would just google "rough liver" and see what comes up. I don't know that much about what a liver looks like on biopsy as I haven't had mine yet, but I do know that the liver, when healthy, is supposed to be smooth. I find it terrible that was all the explanation you were given.

Check out Wikipaedia as there are slides of liver samples on there. PBC you will find as well as ursodeoxycholic acid too. Quite technical though.

Go onto the UK Liver Trust sight as it seems to be more of a medical/technical site and goes into more depth than other sites. They actually have photo's of the different stages of the liver etc

I would be asking the same thing. I had fibrosis on my biopsy, but not that bad yet, but nobody every just told me "rough" That could mean anything from a few nodules to cirrhosis. You need a further explanation.

Go back to see your consultant with a written list of questions! You can get some idea's on what questions to ask from the PBC Foundation website. You have not been given the information you need... Which hospital did you go to? x

HI Skywalker. I am going to see my GP tomorrow so perhaps get some questions answered from him as my next consultant apt is not until September. It was the Medway Hospital in UK.

So will see what GP has to say, I am also going to request a change in meds for this awful itch which drives me crazy. All good fun a. Grrr
