Hello kittysue.

Normally if you have an abnormal result within the full blood count (FBC) which is usually the HB (mine usually comes up one point below normal) then a doctor is likely to take a folate (folic acid), Vit B12 and ferritin count.

After 2 and half years of my HB at one point below normal the GP said the HB was 2 point below (could be the lab) and that I needed to go in for folate, Vit B12 and ferritin check. Was suspected I had low ferritin (iron) due to previous checks of folate and Vit B12 being normal. (I was on the line with the ferritin so finished a short course of iron tablets recently.)

Some of the blood results in PBC are expected to be abnormal and some can be. Folate can be one due to poorer absorption of certain Vitamins (fat-soluble ones normally) and minerals. Thing is as I found, some are needed with others for blood cell formation and others an actually contribute more if you are fatigued if abnormal.

This can be due to PBC your shortage of folate and it is apparently something that can be common. Expect you are on supplements for a short time and then a recheck of your bloods. I have my recheck next week and hope my ferritin levels have gone up considerably in the last 2mths and that all the others that are expected abnormal haven't really changed (the LFTs better than last time would be good).
