Does anyone know if its safe for us to take... - PBC Foundation
Does anyone know if its safe for us to take raspberry ketone as it gets rid of bad toxins many thanks .
My specialist told me to think about why you are taking any remedies like that and what scientific proof there is that they work. I am of the opinion that I shouldn't be putting anymore chemicals in my body than I have to. Why do you think you need them if you don't mind me asking?
Hello Fernleard.
I've not heard of raspberry ketone. So I Googled and had a little read. Now apparently it is thought by some to help fat in the body for losing weight. Personally I'd steer due to the fact that in PBC we can struggle to absorb certain vitamins and if this claim with this raspberry ketone is pehaps of help in losing then I wouldn't think a good idea.
I don't know about it helping to rid the body of toxins though. I somehow think that this raspberry ketone is something to used short-term in the event that wouldn't be of much help in my opinion. Raspberries I believe are high in anti-oxidants so that is perhaps where the idea of this comes from.
One remedy that is old-fashioned and thought to rid toxins from the body is taking a bath in Epsom Salts. I have used it for a couple years on odd occasions. I originally tried with the thinking that it might help somehow with the itching. Epsom Salts also used to be used in the bath to relieve achy muscles.
One herbal that is supposed to be good for the liver is milk thistle. I have taken it myself as an experiment during 2012 and I did get much better LFTs. Milk thistle in high dose as I discovered is used in emergency rooms to combat the toxic effects of a certain poison mushroom. It is thought to be quite safe.
Since my first abnormal LFTs in early 2010 I have taken even more care of what I was eating and also drinking to avoid my liver having to handle more. There are no guarantees as we know with PBC and even taking urso for it but for me I think if I try to help myself I've done the best I can against having PBC.
Thankyou for your response I think I will just go back to the eating healthy. I've been told I have cirrhosis and fibrosis but my latest bloods were good. I don't really understand what happens too me at times I've had to have a couple of days off and stay in bed back to work tomorrow. Take care x
Hi I checked with my consultant re raspberry ketones shortly after I was diagnosed with PBC as I was putting on weight. She told me that they wouldn't do any harm so I went ahead. Unfortunately despite the hype I found they didn't help re my weight issue so I stopped taking them. I guess the short answer to your question is yes it's safe to take them but I didn't find them effective in terms of helping me to lose weight. Hope this helps.
Thanks tigger think I'm going to just work harder on my diet keep well x
Hi you do t mention if any of your meds cause weight gain. I was on steroids for a long time. I have lost weight using the harcombe diet. I am not a medical expert but if you are struggling to loose weight I can personally recommend it. I lost two half stone and my partner over 5 stone. I spoke to my specialist who was happy with it. The main focus is eating healthy nutritious food. I would not recommend any chemicals. I asked my specialist about milk thistle. He said there was no scientific proof so it's maybe about either trusting someone or doing your own research and making your own mind up.
I think with all supplements and medications both can be equally as bad and equally as good.
Just as herbal potions can be more problematic on a condition or ailment so can a prescribed medication or over-the-counter remedy.
I don't agree with taking anything if you can do without it. When I was young although I did take a contraceptive pill for little over a year I never agreed with myself for taking it and can't help wonder now if certain female health problems in later life have been caused or contributed to due to these artificial hormones.
I cannot help but notice that in this century now more and more health problems that are cropping up seem to be quite new and probably not that common say a century ago. Maybe with progression of new technology and how things change over time with the world this then poses these new issues. Or is it because man fusses too much these days in trying to alert things before they even come about?
