I suffer badly with shoulder pain - I'm actually waiting for a shoulder replacement operation. This is due to an injury so nothing to do with PBC. I take co-codamol 30mg/500mg and my liver specialist says that I can take up to eight a day. I usually take two in the morning and two at night and sometimes two at lunchtime. They're not terribly effective but they do take the edge off the pain and also help me get a reasonable night's sleep. However, I think they're only available on prescription.

My consultant only suggests paracetemol or tramadol and I don't really want to go down the tramadol route yet so I stick to the co-Codamol.

Hope this helps..

If you got backpain from heavy lifting you may going to find that a hot bath helps quite well. I am a chronic pain patient since my late teens and tend to use alternatives before going for the painkillers. However, if you feel really rotten my hepatologist told me that I can take up to 6 tablets of paracetamol or co-codamol at any strength. And yes, co-codamol 30/500mg are only available on prescription. The ones you get in the shop are 8/500 and can be quite effective as well. Well, if you should take co-codamol you are not allowed to take any other meds containing paracetamol. :)

Paracetamol .... And wheat bags, warmed in the microwave really help my back when it is bad or a hot water bottle.

Hope you feel better soon

I hope it helps, there is nothing worse than a bad back, it sort of radiates pain everywhere. I have been doing Pilates exercises to strengthen my back and they really help.

I have suffered from a bad back for almost 50 years. Since I have been diagnosed with PBC I have been unable to take the traditional medication (anti inflamatories) I also take paracetamol and use wheat bags.

Apparently a bath with sea salt is supposed to be pretty good. I bought some recently from Holland & Barratt made for bathing. They also do Epsom Salts in it too and I have found it works out cheaper with this (Epsom) than buying the small tubs from Boots for eg that are packed up for constipation.

I use both to try to alleviate the itch. Have heard that in the past Epsoms was good for muscular pains and aches.

I am very allergic to paracetamol. So my consultant has given me 8mg codeine tablets which is the lowest dose. He says I can use these like paracetamol. Also you can use the rub things like nurofen gel as much as you want as it isn't digested.
